Jack Welch was born on November 19, 1935 in Salem, Massachusetts (“Thought Leader”). His father, John Francis Welch, Sr. was a conductor with the Boston & Maine Railroad. His mother, Grace Andrews Welch, was a housewife. Welch has said that his mother was the most important influence on him, cheering him on in sports and academics, and always encouraging him to strive for more. Competitive and outspoken even as a child, he was known among his friends as an expert negotiator as well as a diehard opponent. He and his friends converted and excavated gravel pits into a park where they played fiercely competitive games; they called it “the Pit.” Jack Welch excelled academically as well. In school, Welch played several sports, including hockey, golf, and baseball.

Jack Welch, on opening Day of the Summer of 1940 in Boston, had two good days: he took a bath and went to the Navy Yard where he received his medical report. He soon got back at first, but then got confused, worried about his condition, and got into problems with the Navy.
Jack’s parents found him on a Sunday in ’39 and brought him to the Navy Yard. Since there were no children at home, they found Mr. Welch in a ship which the Welch family brought in from the nearby town of Coney Island.

When a visit to the Yard got to him later in the summer, the Pritzker company had told Jack how the boat was built: a few inches higher, it was a hundred yards long and twenty-five to thirty feet deep. It had no bows or spars and could only be steered from the shore. The pritzker had some “bureaucratic crew”, but they were not all high minded.

What I do believe, is that the family-owned business is always in charge of your business. As I recall it, it always had a lot more to do with the fact that Jack was a good citizen and always had plenty of money than most people in the business. I am glad I have told you so.
