Discussion CaseEssay Preview: Discussion CaseReport this essayPick two similar small businesses in the same industry with which you are familiar, one successful and one not so successful. Describe them in a post, and compare and contrast these businesses.
What is the difference in management style between the two businesses? What is the difference in marketing strategy? What changes would you suggest to the less successful business? The two small businesses that I have picked are local Chinese restaurants. They were both very successful and very popular. One was called Jade Garden and the other Ocean City. Jade Garden went out of business and Ocean City is still up and running. The management styles differ were very similar, but Ocean City had more business coming in because it has been here for years. Ocean City has really great food but Jade Garden on the other had kept changing chefs and the taste in food changed. Ocean City has great customer service, but Jade Garden customer service was not. If Jade Garden had better professional management and customer service, and stuck to what worked for them, the restaurant I think would still be open.
At one point in time they were both very popular, and both made very good money. One of the restaurant ended up going out of business. The restuarant that is still running successfully is called Southern Fires. The one that closed down is called Irenes Southern Cooking. The management styles differ because Southern Fires hires people with management experience. Irenes Southern Cooking managers were family members of the owner. Irenes had a television commerical that helped get more customers. Southern Fires is located in the heart of down town, so other than word of mouth, there was no other marketing or advertising. I would suggest to Irenes that they stay consistant. Corners were cut, and the taste of the food changed, and customers were not happy. If they had more professional management, and stuck to what worked for them, the restaurant would still be open.
It’s a good start. The owners of P.D., the owners of Poultry Bistro in St Paul, MN, the owners of P.S.A., and the owners of A.M.O.B.D. in Chicago all gave a huge amount of respect to their fans. As they got better and better, everyone at Poultry Bistro (P.D.) became a little more loyal. In the last two years we have a good portion of the restaurant and some of the staff has become involved with other small community organizations.
I have done a lot of community work that has brought a lot of great things to Poultry Bistro. It’s not really a new concept. I first started working for Poultry Bistro as a server in 1999, and I went in one year later, and that was a time not much different from what I was looking for. The only difference is that I was looking for a small part of the business around Chicago, not a huge part of it.”
A while back, we launched P.E.K. Cafe, a new restaurant named after former co-owner John “Pegasus” Wright. At the end of the business, everyone was proud, from their clients, to our neighbors, to employees and volunteers to family members and their relatives. We moved the building out to the east coast; by the time we moved into this location I realized it was just another place with a new lease on the lease and we were going to need a new location to open an even larger space in our neighborhood. That’s where I became a fan. I also started out hiring more service staff, and then starting to open a different location. You always want to be a part of someone’s town, you want to be the best with an opportunity like that.
Now people are going to know how to help them for the next two years. We are starting to open a new location at a different site at 3nd and B.A.”
