Does the government have the right to force all American citizens over the age of
18 serve a mandatory military term? The answer is no, they should never be unwillingly
forced into something without having the passion for it in their hearts that is required to
actually do a job with pride. There is absolutely no question that this would boost the
military power of the United States as a whole because it would have a much higher
enrollment to work with, and that would give the nation greater influence in worldly
matters concerning other countries. One has to ask though, what are the consequences?
As a result there would be less democracy, increased rates of rebellion against the
government and government officials, and it would ultimately produce a loss of precious
knowledge that needs to be preserved.
First, a mandatory military term would lead to less democracy. The United States
gives a privilege to all citizens that if they would like to pursue happiness as long as it
does not impose on the rights of others then they may do so. Soldiers have fought and
soldiers have died for this cause so that other citizens had the right to choose. If the
people of the nation no longer have the choice of what they make of their life, then why
did all of those soldiers have to die to defend that right? It would undeniably be a
contradiction to take ones rights so that they may fight and possibly die to protect their
rights.
Secondly, a mandatory 2 year military term would greatly increase the amount of
rebellion in the United States. Yes, it would give the country more power over other
countries but what about the internal conflict it would cause within the country. People
would rebel and lash out to show their disapproval towards the government and possibly
try to take matters into their own hands by taking out government officials that they
blame for the situation. People forced to enlist would rebel and not perform their tasks as
they should be done. That would be their beliefs so they wouldnt do them whole-
heartedly instead they would perform just the bare essential tasks to get by with at
