Title: Measurement of objects
Objective: To measure various objects using different instruments and record measurement in sig figs and +/- notation
Materials: balance, metric ruler, meter stick, thermometer, 50 mL and 100 mL graduated cylinders, buret, and pipet.
Procedures:
Measure a penny using a balance
Measure the length of a piece of paper using a metric ruler
Measure the length of the lab counter using a meter stick
Measure water using a 50 mL graduated cylinder
Measure water using a 100 mL graduated cylinder
Measure tap water using a thermometer
Measure water using buret
Measure water using pipet
Observation, Data, and results:
Instrument Measured object Measurement +/-Notation
Balance Penny 2.41g 0.01g
Metric ruler Sheet of paper 27.90cm 00.01cm
Meter stick Length of lab counter 461.31cm 000.01cm
50 mL graduated cylinder Water 42.0mL 00.1mL
100 mL graduated cylinder Water 92.0mL 00.1mL
Thermometer Tap water 23.1 C 00.1 C
Buret Water 19.60mL 00.1mL
Pipet Water 5.1mL 0.1mL
Conclusion: In this lab I learned how to measure objects more closely to its accepted value. To get the measurement that you recorded to be more accurate your answers should include sig figs which are all the measurements that are recorded as all digits that are certain plus the first uncertain digit. Sig figs are important in calculations because they make your answers more accurate. If your answers are not accurate though they can still be precise if they are all in the same distance from the correct measurement.
