What are your short and long-term goals? Why do you need an MBA to achieve those goals? Why are you interested in Tuck specifically? (500 words)My ultimate career goal is to found a medical device company that will manufacture low-cost but high-quality medical equipment for county-level hospitals in China. After completing my MBA, I will continue my career with a general management rotation program in the emerging Chinese medical devices market to gain more hands-on experience as a step toward my long-term vision.I have been working in the health care industry for more than 8 years. I worked for Siemens Healthcare for 7 years. After I joined the company as an R&D engineer in 2007, I was quickly promoted to team leader after only a year due to my outstanding technical performance. I was also awarded Star Employee, as I was regarded as the best supportive colleague. In 2009, aiming to contribute more to the industry in the future, I chose to transition from the technical side of the business to marketing in order to develop different skill sets and get a complete picture of the whole health care value chain. Two years later, I became the youngest regional business manager in the company’s history. Now I am the youngest regional sales manager at BD.
In past experiences I took a closer look at China’s healthcare system. I witnessed an astonishing growth in the Chinese medical device market, but I realized that there is a great disequilibrium of resources in China: Resources are concentrated in large cities, and most hospitals like those in my hometown cannot afford advanced medical equipment to provide first-class medical services. However, the number of county-level hospitals is several times that of others. In this market large multinational companies lose their advantages and small local companies pour in, but most of them are lacking leaders with business acumen and systematic management knowledge. I realized the need for mastering the functional aspects of a business and the importance of learning from the advanced U.S. health care market to get a sound global perspective. To achieve my career vision, I feel it is necessary to upgrade myself in the abovementioned areas through a top-notch MBA. Combining core values such as a collaborative culture with a large number of alumni resources and academic excellence, Tuck’s MBA program is my first choice.
