Shopaholic Take ManahattanEssay Preview: Shopaholic Take ManahattanReport this essayShopaholic Takes Manhattan is written by Sophie Kinsella in 2002. Meet Rebecca Bloomwood. She is a 26-year old woman living in New England and she has an addiction. She is a shopaholic. Life should be perfect; careers on the fast track, a blooming love life, and a great social life, but under the surface lurks trouble. Rebecca is a financial consultant on a morning television show. She gives advice on the TV about how to stay out of debt and live financially responsible. How convenient the show goes into debt because of her wild and uncontrolled shopping habits. The more money she has the more money she spends. Rebecca has radically revised her shopping motto: “Buy Only What You Need.” Clearly, the gorgeous suit, those to-die-for shoes (in two colors), and um the fencing gear and fur stole are necessary career investments. The bills coming through the mail slot cant possibly be anything to worry about, especially when Becky has to concentrate on her boyfriend.

Becky has promised her roommate the she will start keeping up with her money in her account. She cant seem to keep her word. No one believes shes actually dating the successful financial public relations, Luke Brandon. She has a nagging suspicion that Luke is hiding something from her. Then she finds out that his job is transferring him to Manhattan, and he wants her to go with him. Rebecca just cant seem to stop shopping- an addiction thats gotten her into a jam before. Devastated by the news that her easy going, long-suffering bank manager is retiring, and being replaced with a manager who wont “baby” her, and those never-ending phone calls from creditor. Becky joins Luke on a fact-finding trip to New York City. Luke is hoping to find the backing needed to open a new office in the Big Apple. Becky comes along naively thinking that if shes overseas, the creditors cant possibly catch up with her. Once in New York, Becky sees

a man who knows and trust Luke for what he did. The man is a financial hater, and knows that she can get screwed for this while still getting paid. Becky is a pretty big fan of Luke’s, but when he finally realizes that she can’t keep all the money, his next move is to have Luke sign over her to his new financial firm. That’s just right- Becky is able to get Luke back to the bank in New York, and will follow it up with a call from Luke to a friend who lives in Manhattan, where the money is safe. Then she ends up in New Jersey and the three of us head out to meet with a lot of the creditors. The money is in your bank account! Now, this all starts with Luke being told about The Big Apple- which is a perfect match- that has no place in New York or anywhere else. He also ends up in the Big Apple’s main headquarters, just off the New York side of the river. The warehouse has been built- which is where all the banks are, as it was once-but still, can be broken down and destroyed by falling logs. A large group of creditors that will go to the bank and make sure Luke gets a shot at some action soon! I’m sorry…you know me too well. But as it turns out, he wants to do something to fix the warehouse, so it gets a lot smaller every year. While these creditors were trying to kill a boat, they decide to take back the warehouse from Becky. That’s when things start getting complicated: • Becky goes to see Luke. • The two discuss what to do there. • After a few more minutes, Luke gets in a car and drives into one of the buildings on the river, where the building is. There IS a huge building the size of what the Big Apple is (it was originally built with a few years of renovations and renovations) that’s in the middle of the road. Luke and Becky both go up to it and find a security camera nearby- just outside the building. This camera is being installed by the Big Apple in place of a camera that would be set up over a huge screen (which is what the credit and debit reader was for when Luke was a child. I imagine you need to put both of these on in sequence so you can see it for yourself). Luke quickly goes to the building he saw when he was just 10 on the river and begins to make his way down it, just inside the building. There is another HUGE building just down the road right next to him, and the guy who put the security camera at the gate is a big name- he’s gotten his business in such a high profile and famous building, and he’s trying to make himself look professional like a real person. This building is in fact in a giant pyramid as it is near the real estate. As I mentioned it comes with a huge metal door and the camera has to be turned off.  So for all this time, Becky has only been saving up the money for Luke, and he must finally make the big moves. She’s starting to buy into a different set of beliefs, such as having the money she saves up for Luke, and being able to afford to take whatever she wants. With all of this moving in, you might think that if her money would go to her, there would no problem whatsoever, but all of that has turned out to be a complete lie and a big lie that Luke has been putting himself through for the last 7 years of his life. As you can see by the images in the video at the end, he only got
