Abel constantly is reminded of stories from the past by little events that happened in the present. Abel has memories of the past that are caused by little things like geography or a town name. The memories go into such detail so that you know exactly where its taking place and how it looks. Abel explains his memories from when he was young in the very beginning and describes the valley in which they pass through in such detail. They came to a town name Seytokwa, Francisco remembered a race for good hunting and harvest that took place there. A memory takes place with Abel constantly.
Abel refers back to when he was five and would go out with his grandfather. He describes a place where Vidal would take him and then goes off to describe the rest of the trip. Abel constantly brings his stories from the past into the present and continues to speak, the stories seem to go on and on.
The memories Abel talks about have meaning to him of why he remembered them. His childhood was a good time, a better time. He goes through a phase after the World War II in which he returns and is unable to keep a job and is constantly drinking. He remembers “House Made of Dawn,” Abel would tell stories and sing songs. Abel would sing but it was different because he knew the meaning of what he was saying and others would join incorrectly. He saw beauty in the chants of the old days.
Abels past is constantly colliding with his present reminding him of some memory. These memories remind Abel that life has changed over time and that the past is unavoidable. The time of passing stories on through chant is at an end.
