Temperature and Aerobic Metabolism of Ectotherms
Temperature and Aerobic Metabolism of EctothermsIntroduction: The metabolic rate is the amount of energy expended in a given period, which helps organisms maintain alive and prolong their activities. Many things can affect the metabolic rate of animals such as body size, body temperature, and activity. With knowing the different factors that affect the metabolic rate, the purpose of the lab was to see if they actually had an effect on it. We hypothesized that there was a high chance, the factors would affect the metabolic rate. The goal was achieved by doing an experiment with fish that was in high and low temperatures and finding it’s oxygen before and after the time limit, and then using that to see how it affected the metabolic rate.Materials and Methods:In this lab we used two same fish, Pundulus Grands , one was in high temperature and the other in low. However, in this lab the procedures followed were given in the appropriate lab protocol. Results: Discussion: The results of the fish mass on MR were expected. It was what we expected, the MR rates increases with size, but the relationship is not linear. An animal that is triple the size of another, will most likely have a MR of less than triple that. However, the temperature had a big effect on the animal, it was the most expected factor then all. As the temperature increases so does the MR and the same with chemical reaction.Literature Cited:
