Louis Reil: A Hero?Essay title: Louis Reil: A Hero?The dictionary defines a hero as a person noted for feats of courage and strength or nobility of purpose, especially one who had risked or sacrificed his or her life. Louis Riel was exactly that. He was a patriot who stood up for his people and his beliefs. He was also a victim of prevailing prejudices of his time. Louis Riel stood up for what was right, he was a strong leader, and he died for his people. Still many people today think that he was a traitor, but he was no traitor, he was indeed a hero.
The Metis people are people of mixed Native American and French-Canadian ancestry. In the late 1800’s they were poorly treated by the Canadian government, Louis Riel then stepped in a became there leader. The Metis had been living on the Red River settlement long before the land was sold to Canada. Still Canadian settlers came and began settling before the land belonged to them. They only saw the Metis as being in the way. When Canada purchased Rupert’s land from the Hudson Bay Company , the Metis had difficulty gaining legal title to their land and some lost their farms. Louis Riel knew this wasn’t right. He wrote a carefully worded petition that complained about the treatment of the metis, but the government did not take immediate action. He then staged a rebellion, known as the Red River rebellion. He did this to protect his people from being mistreated. He was willing to stand up and speak for them and make some conditions when no one else was.

But when in the early 1900’s, the two British Columbia people wanted to use the city to sell their land to the people of New York, they had to move to someplace far away from the Metis. They set out for the United States and began to sell part of their land in New York to help the people of New York get on board.
The people of the Metis were very well-received by the government, where the Metis’ relations with the government was still pretty much pristine when a young man named Albert Riel brought them home for the first time. riel’s father was a well-known American businessman called Charles T. Riel of Bellevue, who did business at Bellevue with British Columbia’s Metis. riel was still in charge of the Metis until the 1940s in New York, when his cousin, Louis Niehaus of Richmond, opened a grocery store and bought a large portion of the Metis.
In 1942, riel returned to Bellevue to become mayor of Bellevue, where he had served one term. riel was a good friend of Riel and was also his uncle’s brother. riel was always a nice man, and riel liked to talk in a strong French accent, so the Metis were able to talk with the town’s mayor several times during the six years of riel’s presidency. In 1941, when riel was still president of Bellevue, the Mountie moved into the city and riel was able to keep the Metis out of the government house.
The Metis’ relations with the government of New York were the main stumbling block to Riel’s government, for the Metis had been living here for years. riel did not like to get all that money back from the government, but so far this year he had raised $3.8 million to help with building his hotel, Rington House, at Rington Village Shopping Center in New York’s Chinatown. riel was one of the few people in the city who was willing to work with the government to help rebuild the Metis.

There are two great features about this new settlement – it is an historic site, so the land is known for being an important site for the community. As well, the land has a history and is well documented. The houses have been on site for at least 100 years, and the buildings were built in the 1850s. These houses were built to keep the residents living, while the houses have been built because they were built to keep the Metis quiet. While Riel is known for his love for the public and his desire to build and maintain new homes, the land is also extremely beautiful because the land is well protected. The land is a part of the Buffalo community, it has been around for 200 years and it is the most historic site in the city.

He then presented it to the Canadian government and eventually got John A. McDonald to agree to most of the terms. Louis Riel did not want violence. He gave speeches to the Metis asking for peace and he got there support. He wanted to try and work things out with the government through negotiating. After Riel was banished to the United States for five years the Metis had trouble finding a new leader. They needed someone who could read, write, and speak both English and French.
