Metric System and English System of Measurement
Objective:In this experiment we compared the Metric system and English system of measurement.Theory: The metric system is a system used around the world and is more reliable than using the English System. A unit of length measured in Metrics is meters (m). The length of light traveled in a vacuum defines the units measured by length. The English System is used by only a handful of countries. The English System is far more difficult to use. This system encompasses numerous forms of conversion not rational and held unnecessary. The conversions as follows is 12inches(in.) = 1 foot (ft.), 3ft= 1 yard (yd.), 1760yd = 1mile. Metric has one unit that measures each system. Mass is a measure of how much matter something contains. Weight is a measure of how much gravity pulls downwards. The distance from the equator measures gravitational force on earth. So weight can change according to your location on earth. An English system unit in mass is measured in ounces (oz.) and pounds (lbs.). Metric System units in mass are, measured by grams (gm.) or kilograms (kg.). Mass doesn’t depend on location and remains the same.A balance beam measures the mass of a body. Weight is proportional to mass. The balance is able to find the standard masses where weight equals that of the body on any location on Earth. Procedure:Measured the length of the table in the Laboratory. Compared measurements to the measurements found by partners.Select any two coins of different dimensions. Measure the mass of each coin on the balance. Data: Length of table 71.3 _ inches (in) = 181 Centimeters (cm)Coin one (dollar) 7.6 grams (gm.)Coin two (penny) 2.4 grams (gm.)Report QuestionsCompared to the accepted value that 1 inch is equivalent to 2.54 cm. matches the measurement myself & lab partners got for the length of the lab table which was measured in cm & inches. Using the math equation of 2.54cm • 71.3in = 181 cm shows evidence our measurements was correct. 28.34gm = 1oz, so since there is 16oz in a pound. We multiply 28.34gm • 16oz= 453.44gm in a pound. The reason I think kilogram are the basic unit used because the numbers are smaller and involves moving of decimals. Smaller numbers are easier to work with. A pound in a kilogram = 0.45344 by moving the decimal over by 3 easy way of converting if grams are needed. The astronomical items used the four possible measurements we can use on them are diameter, millimeter, centimeter and grams. If I make a 4ft 5in table 10 times longer; it would be 44ft 2in.In order to get this solution we had to complete a number of calculations. First, converted the feet into inches. Second, added inches together, third, multiplied the sum of inches by 10. Fourth, divide the sum to 12 inch to get the number back into feet & inches. We then rounded the number and got 44 feet 2 inches. Here is the equation used to get the solution. 12in • 4ft= 48in + 5in= 53in • 10= 530in/12in= 44.16 = 44ft 2in
