In this journal entry I will be looking at the Author, Michael Blake, and his style in depicting the tale of Dances With Wolves. Blake is a descriptive writer; his words form amazing images, of a western frontier, and the life of those settling North America at the time. Although I found his sentences were quite long and also that they were not written as well as authors I had read from in the past.

Blake did an amazing job in introducing characters and getting to know them, through many chapters. I think that he did this because the communication between, John Dunbar and the native people were hard for each other to understand when they first met. As the novel carried on communication improved between Dunbar and the natives, allowing Blake to reveal more personal thoughts of the characters. This also meant that the characters were starting to understand each other more, becoming friendlier. This bond formed between them opened all lines of communication, including the understanding of each others culture and language.

One thing that I found lacked in the story was the creation of suspense. Dunbar was a very predicable character. Dunbar being the main character and also a predictable character made the book non-suspenseful overall. The book could have used this writing tool effectively and in its favour to make a giant twist at the end leaving all readers shocked, nonetheless it was still an amazing book.
