With any organization, quantitative analysis programs are essential to success.
Microsoft Excel has been a widely used spreadsheet program by many organizations but is becoming outdated (Grauer, Poatsy, Mulberry, Hulett, Krebs, & Mast, 2011). Other database programs, Microsoft Access for example, are becoming more popular. Excel eliminates data error entries, if formulas are calculated properly (Grauer, Poatsy, Mulberry, Hulett, Krebs, & Mast, 2011). Microsoft has recognized errors in the Excel program that can lead to issues in calculation. Difficulty can arise if someone is calculating for a leap year or for a year before 1900 (Microsoft, 2012). Also, if a sum for a calculation is in excess of the programs capabilities, an error message will be received (Microsoft, 2012). An example would be if two divisible numbers have a remainder, the program would give an error message rather than give a true figure (Microsoft, 2012). With Microsoft Access, the company has attempted to resolve these and other issues.
Collaborative software has become present and popular in business with technological advances and social networking. More businesses depend on the ease of communication provided by smart phones, tablets, and other computing devices (Grauer, Poatsy, Mulberry, Hulett, Krebs, & Mast, 2011). With businesses, doing more communicating online, this easily translates to using the premise of social networking in the personal sector to business networking in the corporate sector. Posting a question using collaborative programs will allow the message to be received nearly instantaneously by many people within the company and allow feedback just as quickly. Files and media can be shared and ideas formulated quickly and efficiently. Yammer uses a similar visual format to Facebook that makes it easy to understand by many whom may be familiar with the networking site (Yammer, 2012). Groups may be formulated to limit access to only certain individuals with an area of expertise (Yammer, 2012). Meetings can be announced and held on the program if individuals are in different locations (Yammer, 2012). This type of software will make communicating and brainstorming with a team more efficient.
There are many advantages in collaborative software in the future. It will increase communication, improve idea generation, increase transparency, increase product quality, and enhance stronger teammate connections while improving the planning process.
Microsoft office access and Microsoft office excel share many similarities, which can make it hard to choose which one is best to use. Each program can store larger amounts of information, run complex queries while using analysis to perform difficult calculations.
