Controversy has centered upon what traits comprise effective leadership. There are many definitions and models of good leadership. Although they differ, sometimes to a large extent, some similarities can be isolated. The purpose of this paper is to identify common denominators of successful leadership in order to formulate an effective personal leadership style.
First, a vision must be created. Vision is a powerful force. According to Christopher B. Galvin, Chairman and CEO of Motorola, Inc., “The people you lead want to know where they are going. You need to communicate a vision that is clear, credible, challenging and worth the effort.” You must have a destination in mind and a well developed plan to get there. Furthermore, a good leader demonstrates a passionate commitment to the vision.
In addition, goals must be considered worthwhile in order to inspire followers. They must satisfy a need. They should answer the question: “What does the world want?” An effective vision often is based upon satisfying specialized needs, thereby providing a worthwhile service.

Develop an atmosphere wherein ideas are integrated from the thoughts and suggestions of many individuals. Encourage the sharing of ideas, act on the best ones, and give credit when and where it is due. Always create an atmosphere of respect for the opinions of all individuals, regardless of corporate rank.
Furthermore, create an atmosphere of concern centered upon a sincere desire to meet the needs of those you lead. Create an atmosphere conducive to growth by providing a no punishment for mistakes policy. Instead, perceive mistakes as learning tools. A good leader must avoid placing individual blame. In other words, both success and failure should be perceived as contingent upon combined, not individual, efforts. Everyone is then responsible or accountable for the organizations performance.
In addition, a good leader should “prepare relentlessly”. Rudy Giuliana Leadership 2002 Hyperion p67 Diligently analyze situations, study options and plan ahead. Focus on the development of proficiency in one specific niche of excellence based on fulfilling the organizations vision.
However, it is important to remain flexible. As situations change, a good leader reviews plans and anticipates modifications. Develop the orientation that change is not only inevitable–it provides new opportunities. Viewing change as a new challenge facilitates the formulation of innovative solutions.
A good leader also learns from the success of others. It is important to observe good role models. Analyze the techniques and styles used by successful
Leaders. Study the methods they developed to insure success.
