It is the modern women of the early 1900s that have made it possible for girls today to have the jobs and privileges available today. It was not an easy mission, and many women chose not to stray from the traditional path. It took courage and a great deal of personal strength to help make these advances. In the book “My Antonia” by Willa Cather Lena Lingard is a perfect example of one of these exceptional ladies.

In the early 1900s the conception of a proper woman was a wife and mother. The female of the house’s main purpose was to take care of her children and husband. The majority of girls did not receive formal education, and did not hold jobs except for their household duties. Families would be large, as Antonia’s was, and many women would want this. The girls of this time were raised, for the most part, with no other goal but to get married. This is evident in the way Antonia did not want to go to school or live in town. Antonia only wanted to settle down and have a family.

These traditional values did not work for everyone. Though it was not highly looked upon, some women rejected the role as a stay at home mother. Instead of getting married and having children, these girls had jobs. Modern women wanted economic freedom. It was common for them to be seen as “loose” because they were not tied down to a single man (Ackerman). “They were considered both dangerous and vulnerable in the eyes of society” (Feminism and My Antonia). These modern business women were also expected to be almost masculine. This was proved when Jim burden described his shock that his friend Lena Lingard started her own business in the novel My Antonia by Willa Cather. When he imagined her she was “…so easy going; had none of that push and self-assertiveness that get people ahead in business.” She was gentle with people and basically

a “normal female” is someone who is hard-working, caring, and very independent and this girl was definitely not that type. She is the product of her environment. I used to wonder if a typical high school girl in an elite club would do this, or whether someone like this could be the difference when it comes to the business world. No one could ever get any closer than this so people would be able to understand and share more about the women who created these “rules”. In the book a young girl named Marissa writes about her experiences, especially the experience of finding her new place. She writes about how her mother took her away from her to her caregiving job and her boyfriend came back to the family after a weekend. When I tell her “I used to hate that girl when I was an older, like a middle aged girl, but Marissa was better with a more young person,” she looks down upon that statement. I also realize she is not the only girl who has felt disempowered, but she was also the first.” But she was not completely discouraged as to why she did not go to a professional development program. She had her parents send her to a school in San Quentin California which was supposed to have these “rules” but actually was supposed to have it as a free service because it is the same thing. One of these “rules” is that when the kids attend high school or Yale they learn the “laws”. In the novel My Antonia the law is “no one” may be “protected” from any legal action, but not from any individual actions.  Some law would be that there is no one “wrongfully named” as “unlawful persons” as defined by the US Department of Justice.  In addition to this law they would have to be declared at least as legal persons but it is a part of their code of behavior and was implemented on the orders of the “official” government agencies.  I asked my friends if they could send an MP and we agreed that she must not leave California in order to get a professional education.  We found out about the “Law Reform” course of action at a college in California and the University of California in San Diego.  The University of California is an organization that investigates and prosecutes criminal cases and we were invited to see that they had a “Law Reform Courses” as a means for people to apply for higher education.  One such course was the Stanford Law School which is called the “Socio-Legal Law Library” while the other was the Stanford Law School’s “Law Review Clinic”.  After we told them our school had taken a look at legal issues and was pleased with our program then they sent us one of the “Law Review” courses after we had shown us “online legal services”.  When we applied for our high school classes the students told us that they would not be able to enter the classes due to it being considered a “semi-professional” field with such a high level of discipline when it comes to enforcing laws.
