The Mohawk Indians and The Navajo Indians
The Mohawk Indians called themselves the Kaniengehaga, meaning “people of the flint”.
The Mohawks have three clans: The Bear, The Wolf, and The Turtle. In 1650 the Mohawk
Indians had 5,000 Indians. Then 10 years later they went down to 2,500 Indians because of war
with Mohicans, Conestoga, and to mission villages like the Caughnawaga. The Mohawk Indians
are part of the Iroquois nation. They stay along Lake Ontario and on the side of the St.Lawrence
River. The Mohawk Indians were also known as the “keepers of the eastern door” they protected
their corner of the Iroquois nation with their ferocity that they were known for in battles. The
first tribe name was the kanienkeh. In the battles they earned the Mohawk name. The Navajo
Indians called themselves the dine. They are the largest tribe in North American because there
reservation stretches 17.5 million acres. The Navajo Indians lived in Hogans they are made out
of mud, sticks, grass, and logs. Once the Spanish settled in, the Navajo Indians began to steal
sheep and horses from them. The Spaniards and Mexicans started to get violent with the Navajo
Indians because they were taking their animals so the Spaniards and Mexicans sent their military
to take them over so two thirds of the Navajo Indians surrendered and did what the Spanish and
Mexicans wanted them to do and the others ran for the mountains and canyons to avoid them.
Both the Navajo Indians and the Mohawk Indians live in the mountains. The Mohawks
live in the Vermont Mountains and the Navajo Indians lived in the New Mexico and Arizona
Mountains. Both the Navajo Indians and the Mohawk Indians still hunt their own food, like deer,
Squirrels, and other animals. Both the Mohawk Indians and Navajo Indians speak English the
Mohawk learned there English from the Dutch, and the Navajo Indians learned there English
from schools that the government sent them to when they were children. Both the Mohawk and
