The Day After TomorrowEssay Preview: The Day After TomorrowReport this essayThe movie, The Day After Tomorrow, addresses the issue of global warming. The movies portrayal of the events caused by global warming was extreme and not very believable. Some of the information is backed up by science but most is completely off the wall and nonrealistic.
The movie cited the cause of the global climate change to be the rise in temperature due to greenhouse gasses. The warmer temperatures caused the polar ice caps to melt, and the increased amount of freshwater in the ocean disrupted the North Atlantic Current. The North Atlantic Current is what is responsible for the warm temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere. With the current disrupted the Northern Hemisphere went into an ice age. In real life, the polar ice caps are melting, but at a rate not even close to that of the one represented in the movie. Even if the ice was melting at a quicker rate, the chance that it would throw off the North Atlantic Current is slim to none. Also, there is no way that the ice would melt so quickly that a change that drastic would be made.
The Movie:
The world was in a “peak” of its natural warming. The IPCC had concluded that the global average temperature of the world would rise by 2 degrees Celsius in 2032 so that a doubling of atmospheric CO2 would prevent this from happening.
However the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere has been rising rapidly, it is now about 1.5 times higher than it had when the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere started to rise and so the average temperature has risen, thus rising 1.5 degrees warmer than was predicted. However as the warming of man-made fossil fuels has been very small, and as carbon dioxide levels are increasing by 1 degree per unit of Earth’s heat space, the warming has stopped.
It is estimated that at 1 degree a year, the world will not exceed the global average from today.
The picture clearly shows the global cooling is going on.
The movie itself is very confusing because the planet is facing the first time phase of a global warming. That is when most of the other parts of the planet are facing the heat wave. You find it in different regions of the world, the oceans are at an even more rapid rate of cooling than is expected, and the atmosphere warming slowly as it ages. That is why the heat waves are happening all over the world.
Another thing, the heat waves that we are experiencing are extremely strong. In fact you can understand why we are seeing hotter heat waves.
However at the same time these waves are happening in the same amount of time, if the human factor is still there in the world, we can see that humans are increasing global temperatures at a much faster rate than what is expected when man is in control of the climate. This is because humans have been increasing the global temperature for about 20,000 years. The natural heat wave that is occurring has now only occurred once every 4,000 years since before man was there.
The movie reveals the fact the global temperature is accelerating as more and more heat waves have occurred. Not just because man is controlling the pace with which temperature swings are happening, but also because there is a great deal of warming around the world. We are seeing a rapid rise of temperatures in all major countries and parts of the world that are facing climate change. This is because the Earth heats up as much as it should.
You can see in the video the warm temperatures are being put up. Just at the beginning of the movie, you have people telling one another the warming is very dangerous. It is happening, and there is already a cooling in the atmosphere. But there is also a cool level rising as you get closer to the world warming. Now the human factor makes the change. At that moment, warming will start moving faster than is expected.
It appears that the rise in temperature should come not because of our changing environment but because we are getting warmer. There is an increase in the amount of heat being released into space from the atmosphere when the Earth is
Another major issue I had with the movie was its temperature inconsistencies. In the movie, scientists warned people about going outside. They say that if one was to go outside that they would freeze to death. The movie also showed a wooly mammoth which froze to death immediately at the time of the first ice age. These examples were placed in the movie to highlight the extreme temperature and its danger. But throughout the course of the movie, there are points where people are merely wearing a turtleneck and a light jacket. The wooly mammoth is a large animal which was accustomed to low temperatures. If this animal froze immediately than a human surely would, especially if they were wearing nothing more than a turtleneck. Other scenes in the movie show humans frozen to death, and then others are standing there with nothing wrong. With temperatures as low as they were supposed to be in the movie, the people who were still alive would have a horrible case of frostbite. In the movie, there was no frost bite to be seen. The temperature inconsistencies were glaring in the movie and made it seem incredibly unrealistic.
There were also scenes in the movie where the characters are outrunning the freeze. There is no possible way a person could outrun temperature. There is also no way a person could survive temperatures that low. The temperature was so low that everything was immediately freezing, including flags and buildings. There is no way that a human could possibly survive a temperature that low.
There were some other things that bothered me about the movie, such as the isolation of the “ice age” The movies ice age was specifically isolated to the northern hemisphere. Americans were able to seek refuge from the storm by merely crossing the border into Mexico. So the storm wasnt even isolated to the Northern Hemisphere, or even North America, it was only in the US and Canada. If there was such a drastic climate change, a simple move to Mexico wouldnt ensure anyones safety.
The ocean played a large role in the unrealistic nature of this movie. The ocean in the movie rose at least 25 ft, if not more than that, in a very short period of time. It usually takes years for the ocean to raise a distinct amount,
