The issues is that Hardee Transportation (PUD) customers have implemented new
hours for their drivers, limiting them to a 14 hour duty day. Hardee Transportation largest and
smallest customers (PUD) operation are set to reflect the previews 10 hours of maximum drive time.
Mr Jim has a couple of option at his disposal to handle difficult situations with the new changes of operating hours. First he can reorganized peddle runs in order to better utilized the new driving hours and optimized the use of bobtails, reduce stem time which is non-revenue producing time because no shipment are handle ( Coyle, Novack, Gibson,& Bardi, 2011, p174). Some of Jim customer require the use of a bobtail which is a waste of time and money. If Jim reorganized his peddle runs and add bobtails to move cargo, Hardee transportation would be able to meet customer demand and increase his revenue.
Another option would be for Jim to require shippers to reduce loading and unloading time. “Since driver waiting time is no longer counted as off duty time, but rather part of the drivers work day” ( Coyle, Novack, Gibson,& Bardi, 2011, p181). If shippers rearrange the lay-out of their site it could benefit both the shipper and Hardee by processing faster cargo. This will allow drivers to increase paddle time resulting in more money Hardee.
The third option would be to hire more drivers to work for Hardee Transportation. This would allow Jim to meet the new hours of services rule, but at the same time Jim would lose money because he would have more people on his payroll.
These three option I would present to Jim of Hardee Transportation. All three are ration option for his company. In the long run he would profit from the use of all three.
