Case Study 1
Abstract.
Mr R is a twenty five year old man who is in full time work which he enjoys and he has been happily married for four years. He has come to me for hypnotherapy to be treated for a lack of confidence. He claims that his lack of confidence is due to always feeling second best when growing up in his household. He has an older brother who, being the first born, was spoiled and used to always get more attention than him. Although Mr. R states that he has no other underlying issues and that there was no real incident that sticks out in his mind as to why it has had such a negative effect on him, he feels that by always being second best in his parents eyes, he has a lack of confidence in speaking to new people and is afraid that no one is interested in what he has to say.
Introduction and Initial Consultation.
Mr Rs job as a heating engineer requires him to talk to new people all the time so he would like to be able to build his confidence enough to feel comfortable when speaking to his customers. He admitted to feelings of embarrassment when speaking to new people and is very conscious of his own voice. Mr R would like the outcome of his therapy to be able to speak confidently to new people and not be so conscious when conversing with a person outside of his social circle. During the initial consultation I ascertained there were no contra indications which may prelude him from treatment . I ascertained there were no ethical issues which may hinder or interfere in any way with hypnotherapy as appropriate treatment. Mr R was fully aware of the fact that I was not yet fully qualified and that he was a case study of mine and that it had been approved by my tutor Eileen Wellings. As Mr. R had never undergone any type of therapy before, I gave a full explanation of what hypnotherapy was and he was more than happy for me to treat him. With no ethical issues or contraindications present at this time, I was happy to treat Mr R as my case study. From the information gathered at the initial consultation I assessed Mr Rs modality as visual, I decided to use a permissive style screed after referring to the chrysalis client screed assessment. I assured Mr R that he will remain anonymous throughout and that in the case study none of his personal details would be given out and would remain confidential. I have thoroughly investigated Mr Rs issues and fully understand them.
Diagnosis.
From the information gathered in the initial consultation, my diagnosis of Mr Rs issues in my current experience are lack of confidence and low self esteem. I believe that his lack of self esteem reflects a condition that is rooted in the past. It is clear that in Mr. Rs childhood, he had been given negative comments and those comments were buried in his subconscious mind, contributing to the way he perceives himself. Thus, influencing the degree to which he can exhibit self esteem. By acquiring that critical inner voice, it has instilled a false belief in himself and instilled an internal fear of ridicule.
