Week1
“Drawing knowledge from theoretical frameworks such as the family developmental theory, nurses are able to assess a family’s developmental progress, identify family strengths, assess current problems and anticipate future problems” (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012).   Dinwiddie County offers a variety of departments and agencies within the community that would be beneficial to the family. Their goal is education, prevention, and disease management while providing resources for the community to achieve these goals (Bishop, T. 2015, January 23. Telephone interview). The department has resources that can assist with vision screening for Mrs. G’s declining vision and referrals resources in the treatment and maintenance of Mr. H’s Alzheimer’s. “Dinwiddie County Fire & EMS is responsible for the delivery of fire services, emergency medical services, and the emergency / disaster management program” (“Dinwiddie Virginia”, n.d.). They provide a safe environment for screenings, fairs, etc. Free fire and safety screenings for homes, smoke detectors, and educational opportunities are offered. A home screening gives suggestions for a safe environment such as a fence around the pool, fire alarm checks, and a home alarm system. The Eastside Community Enhancement Center offers recreational classes, health screenings, fitness and nutritional programs, and events such as cards, dancing, physical fitness, etc., (Hall, M. 2015, January 22. Telephone interview).  They partner with agencies in the community. Programs are designed to meet the needs of the community in promoting a healthy lifestyle.  Mrs. G likes to play cards and the socializing with others in the community would help her build relationships. Exercise and fitness programs are designed with the elderly in mind to strengthen muscles and bones which would help Mrs. G. These are activities she can enjoy when Mr. H. is at the adult day care.
“Crater District Area Agency on Aging (CDAAA)is committed to helping Virginias seniors to remain in their homes for as long as possible while helping to maintain their quality of life and independence as they age” (“Crater District Area Agency For Aging”, n.d.).  They provide information and services for older adults and those who care for them. A case manager or referral specialist can assist Mrs. G. in making long term plans for them both as they are up in age and their children are not an active part of their lives. Caregiver support groups would help Mrs. G. and let her know she is not alone. Respite care would give her break while keeping her husband safe.”The members of the Dinwiddie County Sheriff’s Office shall, through a partnership with the citizens of our community, provide the highest possible degree of protection for the county residents, guests and their properties” (“Dinwiddie Virginia”, n.d.). Project Lifesaver Braclet is an innovative, rapid response program aiding victims and vulnerable families suffering from Alzheimers disease and related disorders offered through the Sheriff’s department.  This bracelet would keep Mr. H. safe and reduce the stress of Mrs. G.  The Neighborhood Watch Program would allow Mrs. G. to get to know her neighbors and develop a system for keeping the community safe.
