Content Summary
The abduction and murder of Adam Walsh helped usher in the change of the dynamics of how children should be protected in the eyes of the law. These new modifications made law enforcement agencies and society take more notice, are more aware of missing and exploited children and become more proactive and reactive when children are the victims of crimes. On July 27, 1981, Adam Walsh was abducted. The events of that played out in the following manner as explained by this novel. Reve Walsh and her son Adam went to the shop for lamps. They started their shopping journey by heading to Sears Mall. Upon entering the mall, young Adam Walsh noticed the toy department, which turned his attention to a game called Asteroids being demo in the toy department. At that time, he begged his mother to go play the video game while she go purchased the lamps that were on sell as advertised. Mrs. Walsh eventually said yes after being very reluctant to do so. After Mrs. Walsh located a salesman and both looked around the whole store, in turn not finding the lamps, Mrs. Walsh became disappointed. The salesman informed her that he would give her a rain check and call soon as the store obtains a shipment of these lamps. Mrs. Walsh said thank you and proceeded to go locate Adam. Mrs. Walsh went back to the video game area, search around the store, parking lot, and then got others involved to help locate for Adam. This case would go unsolved for an estimation of 25 years. There were two factors that played a critical part in this case. First, Lead Detective Hoffman and his team had little to no clues to help guide their search for Adam. Secondly, the case was riddled with problems and easily transitioned into a cold case due to the incompetence the Hollywood Police Department. Some of these issues about the way the investigation was being handled included, wasting time on interviewing useless suspects like Jimmy Campbell, phones at the police department were being answered on an inconsistent bases, bad documentation process, key witness were being interviewed long after the investigation was initiated, tips were not being logged in and no one seemed to be in charge in the overall handling of this case, not even Hoffman or Lieutenant Hynds seemed to care. Eventually the case was scaled back to only three officers being used and the realization of the police department of the issue of not having any evidence to continue the search for Adam Walsh. Two years later, Toole admitted to the killing of Adam Walsh to Det. Kendrick, Cummings and Via while incarcerated on charges for arson and murder. Regardless of the multiple confessions from Otis Toole, knife, and Cadillac, Det. Hoffman informed the Florida Today newspaper that Otis Toole was no longer a suspect. After this information was communicated to the public, years started to pass with no new information about Adam Walsh. Adams 11th, 12th and 13th birthday passed with no word and during that time, Chief Sam Martin retired. During this same period of time, Otis Toole sent multiple letters to people and organizations that had direct connections with Adam Walsh case. In these letters, he acknowledged his self as the person whom abducted, raped and killed Adam Walsh. Otis was demanding money from these people and organizations to either hurt them or help them depending on how the individual or organizations benefited Otiss financial position. These letters were ultimately disregarded and just filed away by Detective Hoffman. Still in 1992 and 1993, there was no other new information that was passed as Adams 18th and 19th birthday passed. At this time, the Hollywood Police department went a transitioned inside their department. A new
