[pic 1]Organizational Assessment SASS 425: Financial Management Michelle Holy9/28/15Overview of The Music Settlement: (1-2)        The Music Settlement (TMS) was founded in 1912, established by Almeda Adams. Created as part of the settlement movement, starting in the late nineteenth century and topped in the midst of the mid twentieth century, Adams’ mission was to provide music lessons to a wide audience, especially underprivileged children, to create a community of artistic expression. As a social reformer, Adams, hoped to relieve poverty and create a fairer and honest society.        Originally called The Cleveland Music School Settlement, all activities were performed in the Goodrich House, founded by Flora Stone Mather.  Although blind, Adams mastered and taught music with the help of colleagues and a $1,000 donation from the Fortnightly Musical Club. In the beginning, the settlement provided inexpensive to free music training for Cleveland’s immigrant population, especially children. In 1938, a wealthy banker, Edmund Burke donated his forty-two room house to TMS.         In 1963, TMS had 1,300 students enjoying and learning about music. By 1966, TMS began their music therapy program to assist both children and adults with special needs. Changing its name in 2008 to The Music Settlement, it currently offers early childhood education for children from ages three to eights, private and ensemble music instruction from strings to wind instruments, to their one of their top performing jazz ensembles, JAMS (Jazz at the Music Settlement), and music therapy. Some famous alumni of TMS include singer-songwriter, Tracy Chapman, and “The Soloist” Nathaniel Ayers.
