Many people all over the world go through different relationships that they build up on. Most people build on those relationships for the good and some for the bad, and in order to get the relationship you want you must experience the bad parts of a relationship and the good parts. Janie went through this process in her life and some of her relationships were for the good and some for the bad, but overall she learned to deal with all of her relationships and in the end she ends up finding what she was looking for in the first place. From each relationship Janie got a new perspective of what life and relationships should have been and shouldnt have been like.
It was Janies first husband Logan that showed her a relationship that she wouldnt want to be in. She realized in this relationship that a man shouldnt treat women the way he treated her regardless of the time and place. Not only did Logan treat her bad, he didnt treat her like a lady should be treated. One other that Janie realized from this relationship is that a woman should do the work in the inside and the man should do the work in the outside. Later on in the marriage Logan stopped being sweet, kind and loving to Janie and just wanted her to be his help on the fields. Once she started getting fed up with it and grew courage to rebel against him, she told him that she was going to do the work inside and he was going to do the work outside. “You dont need know mah help out dere, Logan. Youse in yo place and Ahm in mine” (31). This quote explained how Janie felt about the working part of a woman in a relationship After a while Janie got fed up with the way Logan treated her and decided to leave Logan for another man by the name of Jody. She seemed happy with the way Jody was and what his plans for the future were. So she decided to commit herself to him and marry him and it shows in this quote “So they were married before sundown, just like Joe had said.” (Pg 33.) Jody had promised her the world and promised that they would be married by sundown. Janie learned a lot from the relationship she had with Logan, one of the big things she learned that if she was not happy with the man nothing was stopping her from leaving him and thats just what she did with Logan.
With Janies second husband she ends up staying with him till he dies, because he died before she could leave him. Jodys death was somewhat Janies fault too because of the stuff she told him when she got fed up with him. At first Janie was content with Jody because he treated her like a trophy wife around people and everybody that lived in Jodys town loved Janie because of the image that Jody gave her. Later on in the relationship was when the problems started arising. She learns in this relationship what jealousy men carry inside them. Jody wouldnt let Janie wear make up and he would make her put her hair in a bun because he was scared she might leave him. When she starts becoming rebellious because she doesnt want to wear her hair like that she learns a new side of Jody; the abusive side of Jody. After Jody hits Janie she becomes even more rebellious and starts embarrassing him in front of the townspeople by saying he is so manly because he hits a woman, and it shows in this quote “Its so easy to make yoself out God almighty when you aint got nothin tuh strain against but women and chickens.” (Pg.75). In this quote Janie tells some of the townsmen some stuff about Jody because she is becoming fed up with him. After a while Janie stayed quiet when Jody would insult her about her looks or get mad at her but when she said enough is enough it was enough. She got so mad at him when he said she looked old in front of his friends that she embarrassed him because of the size of his privates. “Humph! Talking bout me lookin old! When you pull down yo britches, you look lad de change uh life” (79). After that comment Janie and Jody werent the same the rest of their marriage, and it showed because he didnt want to show his face in front of the town anymore. They continuously fought over and over until one day Jody had a heart attack and died mainly because of Janies comments. Janie learned a lot from this relationship because she knew what it was like not being able to be herself and act the way she wanted without Jody
