“Of mice and men”
The novel, “Of mice and men” by John Steinbeck is a sensational story about two men by name of Lennie and George who work on the farmlands of California. The story begins by showing the reader how Lennie; a grown man with the strength of four men, suffers from a mental disability and how his childhood friend George, helps and teaches him while they try to build up for their ultimate dream.
Men in their situation work from farm to farm for months at a time and spend they checks as fast as they get them. George and Lennie were once like them until they both set out a plan for a better life. They were to get a piece of the America dream by getting their own little piece of land with their own little shack. Lennie would grow with delight when George would tell the story of their land. He knew the story by heart but loved when George would say it. George often grew tired and frustrated with Lennie and say mean things like “You crazy son-of-a-bitch. You keep me in hot water all the time.” (p.11) that would hurt any mans feelings, but Lennie with the mind of a four-year-old would easy cry and suggest how he should just leave and live in the hills. George knew Lennie couldnt survive in the hills by his self and would try to calm him down with the story of their own land. He would begin the story and tell it like he already seen it and been there and can still see it in his memories. Lennie just loved when George would tell him about the rabbits.
In the story the author reveals the childhood of Lennie. When he was a kid his Aunt Clara would give him live mice and he would pet them and pet them until he snapped their neck and they died. He never might to snap their necks. He grew up to love soft things and loved to pet them. George saw how he killed mice to easy and decided that when they got their own land he would give Lennie his own rabbit farm. George thought that he couldnt kill a big rabbit as easy as he did with mice. Lennie was too strong for his own good, which led himself and George into some trouble.
Before the two men reached Curleys dads farm, Lennie had gotten into some horrible trouble with a young lady. One day Lennie saw the young lady wearing a pretty soft looking dress and wanted to pet it. The young girl startled by the big man began to scream; this only frightens Lennie and made him hold on to the girl even tighter. Later on the story shows how the girl called rape and Lennie and George had to run off in the late nights air.
George looked over Lennie like an older brother and taught ways to get out of trouble. When they were only a couple of miles away from Curleys dads farm George made them wait until to the morning to appear up there. When Lennie asked why George said I have my reasons. During that night George saw a brush simply told Lennie to remember, if anything goes bad at the farm go to that there brush and wait for him. Lennie said it over and over again until he remembered to go to that there brush. The next day they finally reached the farm and within half of a day George could tell it was going to be some trouble.
Curley the bosss son was a little man with a temper that was shorter than him self who suffered from the short man anger. He loved to pick fights with people taller and bigger than him. When he laid eyes on Lennie and George, the first person he went after was Lennie. George couldnt stand the sights of Curley. He saw no reason for anyone to go after Lennie. He was just like a big toddler. Later that week Curleys hard feelings for Lennie soon turned to fear for the two fought and Lennie showed who the bigger man was and crushed Curleys whole hand as easy for a child to smash a banana.
From the very start George disapproved of the place and wanted to leave, but couldnt because he wanted to save some money so him and Lennie could finally be by their selves with their own land. Going against his own instincts he stayed, but soon regretted when he saw Curleys wife. Word around the farm is that she had an eye for the guys. That was approved to be correct to George when she step into the bunk room and shot George and Lennie the eye. When she left George quickly forgot about her, but Lennie seemed to be infatuated by her. This made George alert on the possible trouble that could lead them two so he told Lennie to stay away from her. Lennie didnt see what he had done wrong, but listened to George anyway because he was scared that George might take his rabbits away.
