Natalie Maines
Natalie Maines is an American singer and activist. Natalie has stated several times that she always felt like a hippie and a rebel even as a child. She considers herself a rebel who, “always loved not thinking in the way a majority of people thought.” In March 2003, Natalie made a comment that caused controversy. She stated that the Dixie Chicks, “…we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas. This was on the eve of the Iraq invasion. Many people were offended and shocked by this comment, including another country singer. Toby Keith displayed a photo of Natalie Maines with an Iraqi dictator at one of his concerts. Natalie lashed back by wearing a shirt that said; F.U.T.K. Which was an insult directed towards Toby Keith. Natalie later apologized for her comment towards the President of the United States, she said that it was disrespectful and that the President should be treated with the utmost respect. Natalie received death threats after apologizing, but she only said that she would apologize for her comment but not for who she is.
