NBA Teams make a slam dunk with information technology
Basic information about National Basketball Association
The National Basketball Association (NBA) is the most renowned mens professional basketball league based in North America consisting of thirty franchised member clubs which are further divided into Western and Eastern conference. Each NBA team has a total of 82 matches, which is 41 home and 41 away, implying that two teams will confront one another in a total of four matches. The actual champions of the NBA are the Dallas Mavericks. The club joined the NBA in 1979 and has till date won the league for the first time in 2011 and the Western conference cup twice (in 2006 and 2011).
The reasons for which NBA switched to new technology were due to problems encountered with the traditional approach. This consisted of lack of precise details on a certain move and low reliability. In short, poor flow of information!!
Problems encounter with traditional approach
The statistics of the matches provided were not very reliable and helpful. This is because it failed to capture the complexity of the game, such as every single move and details of each player. Furthermore, these were not easily related to videotapes of games as the capacity of the movie reel was of only 60 seconds which was insufficient to record the matches of a season in a single reel.
Some years later, indeed with improvements in technology, there was a switch to the use of videotapes. However, there were still drawbacks such as inability to reorder quickly the essential elements of the game and inability to blend visuals with statistics. Even to forward or backward to a particular spot and to copy a specific segment to another tape was a tough job, thus limiting coaches ability to look at particular players or plays.
Consequently due to these shortcomings, players and coaches were unable to take good decision of how to attack and trick their opponent teams moves. Their decisions were mostly based on intuition and experience. As such new tactics to trick their opponents were very difficult to develop. The opponent teams players tactics were not being exploited fully to benefit their players. Moreover, videotapes did not show precisely the particular moves of a specific player or teams. So viewing 82 games were quite tiring and time consuming. This led to a drastic change from the traditional approach to a new and sophisticated technology, known as The Synergy Sports Technology. This was why the NBA team was considered to make a “slam dunk” with information technology, indicating an action with a definite outcome.
