I am writing this essay upon the request of the Augusta County Juvenile
Court System. I believe that during the time for which I have lost my
license I have learned many facts. Facts on why it is unsafe to speed and on
the importance of following the speed limits set. For example, one quote
which I found to be very true is, “The faster you go, the more likely you are
to crash. The faster you crash, the more likely you are to die.” While auto
accidents themselves injure a person in the United States every 10 seconds,
speeding drivers are the cause of nearly 30% of these collisions. The
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that
speeding alone was a contributing factor in almost one-third of all fatal
crashes last year.
One thing that speeding does is reduce the time that a driver needs to
avoid having a wreck. This increases the chances of crashing and the
likelihood that the accident will be serious or even fatal. Secondly, speeding
increases the distance needed to stop, which can easily cause someone to
hit someone or something. Speeding drivers also may not be able to judge
distances as well and just about anything around them could be at a greater
risk. Just in this past year, out of the accidents that occurred on holidays
30-40% were caused by speeding alone.
I think a huge part of speeding by teenagers is the fact that many do
not realize just how dangerous speeding really is. The reason behind this
statement is that I was a speeding teenager, and a lot of my friends are
speeding teenagers. I think I would have thought twice about speeding if I
knew
