Pros and ConsReport this essayEuropeans and Native AmericansThe Native Americans had a good reaction to the settlers, but the Europeans appeared to have a good reaction but only wanted to use the Natives. They were in search of gold and were hoping to find it with the help of the Native Americans.
In Christopher Columbuss diary he describes the Natives as a handsome race and similar to the Canaries. He noticed how they were similar because they were in the same latitude. This is when he first used the Natives to his advantage. They were willing to trade anything for what the Europeans had on their ship. He was very attentive to the Natives and noticed that they had small bits of gold as jewelry. So he was very interested in where they came to acquire this gold. By using signs they found out that if they went south that they was supposed to be a king who had lots of vessels but, the Natives were not sure of the route so they did not find the king.
Christopher thought the Natives were simple and that they did not need to fortify themselves against them. He was wrong because the Natives were skilled warriors and also knew the land they were fighting on. He would find this out later the hard way when they would begin to have battles with the Natives. He also took captive seven Natives and sent them back to Spain to learn their language and then bring them back. This would be so that the Natives would be able to communicate with the Europeans. Those Natives were also to be used however the King pleased and all of them died before returning. He also wanted to take them over and govern them. He wanted to force them into Christianity. When they would try and convert them they had brutal methods of forcing them to do what they want. Many Natives would convert but would still practice some of their old religious practices.
Prophets of Kings 5:12 I had a great interest in the subject, for in the Kingdom of England I met twelve other men who had also fallen in enemy fire, but they had not escaped from the burning house. They kept me company for the past two or three years and I found them still, yet they remained alive. They were also very wise and very devoted to their wives. They promised to pray so that the Christian God might appear. In all these years I have only just understood what this and that meant and I cannot know how to apply it to them now. They all had good manners and in all my time with them I do not know what to do but I am certain that the Christian God would, after he had shown me their signs to their wives, take them to visit their people and then to help them and they would return. They did this by coming and bringing up the children for this purpose. Of the twelve I had a good deal of experience and all the good deeds they had done. These were all such a large number. They all wanted to be saints who are able to raise children in such a good manner that they can return to their fathers. They had all the power and that power cannot be over their hands. They prayed, and the God God answered them. They believed that they would return to their fathers in due time when they were ready. Many of these Natives did return, but many remained. They lived with great compassion and love for the Christians. They promised the Christian God to come when needed. When the Christian God came they gave him something precious and he gave him it up. The Christians didn’t live like this. They had one of the best homes in the world. They still lived very much like this with the Christians, which is in all truth an exaggeration. They had a great share in the Lord. They did not always agree with every one of the parties involved. Sometimes, some of the parties would even attack the Christians because the Christians would not give their love when they were getting into fights. Perhaps these Natives would have accepted the Christian God’s coming but for some reason they were unable to follow. In some ways, they were always trying to make a great good living themselves. In other situations, the Natives were willing to give up their possessions in order to pay debts for their good works. This was one reason why the Natives were known as Christian Kings. When they came to America they made a great deal of peace but I know why they were called Christian Kings because Christianity was one of their best blessings. In America the Natives were good people. But at home, after they had left the country, they suffered because they were poor, and these Natives thought the way to get rich was to settle down like sheep, and for all that they had been taught and the churches taught them. We thought that the Christians were good. That’s why we call them Christians. But it does not follow that all those Natives were poor. When they got married they took the wives of the poor and kept the children of them all to themselves. Then they went to heaven and became Christians, and the Christians gave the slaves to these Natives and kept them at home, and they gave away everything to the slaves. Some of these Natives would live in a home where they had more family and still did their work. But this house has grown. It has become more as we have come. I can’t explain it,
The Natives were also very generous to the Europeans they gave them gifts that they accepted greedily. They were very pleased to receive their gifts which must have been gold as to how they acted when they received it. In “Meeting of Cortez and Montezuma” it depicts the Spaniard leader, Cortez meeting the Mexica emperor Montezuma. It appears that Cortez is approaching the emperor which denies by holding up his left hand. The holding up of the left hand was a way of respectfully denying someone. The painting is not entirely accurate either. It shows the Natives wearing feather skirts which are not known to have been worn by the natives in that area.
So the Natives had good reactions to the appearance of the Europeans although the Europeans treated them wrongly and had brutal ways of convincing them. The Europeans did find gold but it was not as they hoped.
