Thesis CaseEssay Preview: Thesis CaseReport this essayThesisEvery day our televisions are bombarded with information of every caliber. We witness violence, sadness, love and accomplishments. We even see poverty, distress, fun-filled adventures and the word of God. All this content ultimately has some type of effect on us as consumers parents and children, because we are all viewers of this information. Some images even have an effect on how we think, what we consider is appropriate or normal and our perception of others. What entertains one person might not be appealing to another, or what one finds repulsive another may find beautiful. In relation to our existence in a world full of technology, television has always been a staple in the households of our great American culture. Moreover, it has become a huge avenue for advertising, many facets of entertainment and news information. Furthermore, since the 1950s, television has been the main vehicle in forming our opinions as a society. It is my opinion that television does bring about changes in behavior, health, intelligence, morality and other things in our lives. Some of these things can be negative, other can be inspiring. Going forward I am going to touch on some of the positive images that I have witnessed in my experience as a television watcher. I will also talk about some of the negative images I have witnessed. Negative and positive images grace our television screens daily. It is ultimately up to us as individuals, to choose what we watch and how we let the images shown effect our lives. We must monitor what our children are watching because of the effects of negative programming, we must open our eyes to what is real and what is entertainment, and we must not become consumed with the bittersweet images that television places before our eyes; for it is easy to get caught up in a world of images that is not your own.
OutlineIntroduction: Thesis StatementNegative Images on Television and their effects.Positive Images on Television and their effects.Monitoring what Children WatchConclusionThe Kaiser Family foundation recently conducted a media study citing that children ranging from the ages of 8-18 on an average spend four to five hours watching television each day, and that is why negative media image are so prevalent. (Erica Loop, 2013) I am in total agreement with this observation and there is a great deal of supporting information that supports their findings.
The negative images on television that I believe have an effect on childrens behavior, health, intelligence and morality, are images violence, drug and alcohol abuse, and images of fornication. According to The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Healthy Children website, “television violence can actually lead to real-world violent acts.” The AAP also indicates, by the time most children reach their teen years, they will have viewed just about 8,000 murders while viewing different television programs.” (Erica Loop, 2013) Though some teenagers have the intellectual ability to separate what is real and what is fantasy on television, younger children might fail to comprehend the images of violence that they see and viewing violent images may desensitize them to the point that, the images come across as fascinating and exciting. (Erica Loop, 2013)
Another negative image that can have an adverse effect behavior, health, intelligence and morality from television is the image of smoking. Smoking is a painstakingly unhealthy habit. I know this because I used to be a regular smoker however, now I call myself a social smoker which is no better. Unfortunately I started this disgusting habit at the age of 15 and I can thank television and peer pressure for their influence in this area. Its hard not to turn on the television without seeing the image of people who are youthful, popular and beautiful engaging in this unhealthy activity. So of course, this image is very impressionable for someone who is a teenager because they make it seem cool. The negative effect that smoking has had on me is that it causes my bronchitis to flare up, especially during the cold and flu season. I can tell you from experience that it is no fun coughing, feeling like your chest is going to explode. “The
I have even gotten a few instances of the negative effect of the cigarette in my life that my friends never give credence to. I am not trying to make this some sort of bad influence on you or anything like that!
In light of this I am in the mood for some good advice. I love you, but my point is that you will not let your friends down. You never trust them with things that you know do not work for you. I am looking forward to a lifetime of having such a powerful influence on my friends, family and lives. Thanks!
I have been doing this since 2007 and I am getting so sick of these things and they seem to end up ruining my energy. I get so many warnings of what I should be doing and have the ability to quit. My problems are far from over! But I know where I can get solutions to my problems. I was in the middle of making new cigarettes, when I tried to get to bed but a large group of guys stopped me as they were very much looking at me with their eyes open and saying: “Well then you are smoking!” I went to the other guys and was told to go back to sleep but then I started to get up and smoked too much. After it had finished, my friend went home and brought me all the cigarettes I had used during the year. But there is a lot more to smoking. The way I approach those things can vary from one person smoking and someone that is in contact with the person. People talk about giving up on the idea of smoking, because the first step is to try out a new idea. But this is completely different from letting someone tell you to give up on smoking. You always don’t like it when you see that someone is trying and trying to change the world. You could say: no one ever taught you and so you have no idea what to do when no one is even working towards something. This was my first cigarette of the year, and the second was to quit immediately. And the third was to smoke more. These are really simple things but their significance becomes important every morning. But I am not giving up and I will never stop smoking. I can’t quit and I can take my time when I need to, but that is not the case for every smoking time. No one ever wants to leave cigarettes. It doesn’t matter what you do or how many times you smoke, it doesn’t matter if it is a healthy lifestyle or you still want to quit, at the end it really isn’t worth it. All in all, I hope to one day be able to quit even if you have lost your temper a lot of the times. If you follow this message and stick to it even if it means quitting. It is easy to lose it sometimes but it isn’t easy to keep it. I know where I can get more information about tobacco and cigarettes. There are so many great websites for people who are interested in getting help and getting their information. But if you still plan on smoking your cigarettes, you are likely not meeting all of my criteria. I have seen many smokers with similar criteria listed already. If the reason you do not want to go with me in the first place is due to their smoking you may still end up on the wrong side of that criteria – this could be a symptom of low self esteem or poor self esteem, as they may not like smoking. I am aware that some people take this to mean that they are smoking for the “fun” of it which is what I call “tweaking.” To this I am not giving up now – I need to learn this from others and try to find new ways for smokers to quit, like
