By the early 1700s thing that happened in Europe caused mass migration to colonial America.  Most of these events were political, religious, and economic in nature.  Consequently, a variety of individuals for an assortment of reasons found their way to New England and Chesapeake Bay colonies. The majority of people that were in the north had moved due to religious purposes and the population was mainly made up of families. While the majority of people that were in the south had gone to colonial America for wealth and this population was made up of men with no families. As you see both regions had different motives to move to colonial America and this is why the societies have a difference in motives for moving, difference on their opinion to slavery, and the difference in the age of the people.          The people that moved to the New England area were there for one reason and that was to escape the religious prosecutions that were going on in Europe. Document four shows their religious motive as it talks about how they will set up their society around religion and not profit. It even states, “We intend that our town shall be composed of forty families,…rich and poor”. This is saying how they don’t care about profit and are only focused on religious. This is very different from the south because that is what the south wanted. The Chesapeake region was settled for men who weren’t too young or old to work. The goal of the Chesapeake area was to find gold and anything else that could be considered profit. In document five it states, “There was no talk…but dig gold, wash gold, refine gold, load gold…”. This statement shows that the men didn’t care about anything but money. This group was mainly people that couldn’t afford to live in Europe and needed a fresh start. New England was to escape religious prosecution and the Chesapeake area was settled to make money and get rich.          Another difference between the societies in New England and the Chesapeake region was their opinion on slavery. Since the people in New England were there for religion and not profit, they didn’t find the need to use slaves as a work force. All they needed to grow was enough food to provide for their families and that could be done by the man of the house and the young boys. However in the Chesapeake area it was a much different story. They were there for profit so they didn’t a big work force in other to yield more crop growth which then led to more money. At first they used indentured servants which were people that worked for wealthy farm owner until there debt was paid off and then they were set free. This didn’t go on forever though; document six talks about Bacon’s rebellion which was when indentured servants rebelled because they wanted their freedom. Due to Bacon’s rebellion slavery was used more because slaves lived longer, and the owner wouldn’t have to let him go free. Slaves could also then work longer and could be treated differently from indentured servants because they were seen as property. So to conclude this is how New England and the Chesapeake area were different towards slavery and if they used it or not.
