2.1 What is the problem?
The problem that MSD Argentina has is when they introduce new intern program. The program was developed by Antonio Mosquera, Managing Director of Merck Sharp & Dohme Argentina. The intern program was to recruited young professional to do internship program in MSD,mostly for students in their final year in college. Only 15 candidates were selected. From 1200 applicants and down to 70 candidates for personal interviews and a battery of psychological and problem solving test and only 15 people were selected. The selected candidates will be assigned to assist sales representative for on job training, they would work 20 hours a week and were employed for period of 6 months. This internship program could help the students to gain experiences before they graduate, also could put on in their resume as well.
Furthermore, one of the candidates of internships program was the son of a high ranking official in government national health care program for government retirees, which was one of the largest health care organizations in the country. However, based on Silvia Ring examination of the candidates, the person were not qualified to received the internship program due to the ranking was 16 (scored only slightly less than the person on 15th place).
Since Antonio Mosquera planned to change the organization culture and behaviour in MSD, excepting this person would be against his mission, however this person could be benefit to the MSD due to connection with local government will have a very good opportunity to get MSD products in government formulary as well as increasing sale.
Managing director, Human Resources Director, Director of Sales and manager of Training and development were discussing this issue, whether they should recruit this person or not.
2.2 What was the vision and mission of the new managing Director? What has he done to restructure the management of the company?
The vision and mission of Managing Director of MSD was to restructuring the organization as well as its culture, which he felt that there many things that need to be changed in MSD. His vision was to uncharacteristic MSM from other Argentine companies, especially in the pharmaceutical industry. And the mission was to change the company behaviour as well as it culture.
To restructure the management of MSD, Mosqouera made a huge changed such as new structure had been developed with 12 directors , this done to break down “silos” in the company, and make the company structure flatter, more integrated management structure , complete transparency, and empowerment within the organization.
