My view on new media on my generation is more of an opinionated argument than an objective. As it says in the “Back To Reading Aloud” article the argument of new media on this generation is the choice of immediate gratification or investing in the future? New media to me is basically a gift and a curse toward this generation. Also in my opinion new media is the way of teaching, future goals and peoples dreams now a days.
The way I look at new media is that it can be very distracting at times but controllable. In my eyes the problem with teens now is our decision too let websites like Facebook , Tumblr , and texting/instant messaging get more attention than their school work. I will admit that I am not innocent of this but it doesnt mean someone cant manage both. These websites can also be used for something constructive. Things like using to find your passion in life like Vishal in the “Growing Up Digital, Wired for Distraction” article.
On the other hand social media, texting and other usual “teen activities” may be distracting to a point that they cant focus on anything else. According to a study released in 2010 by the Kaiser Family Foundation, today, 8-18 year-olds devote an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes to using entertainment media across a typical day thats. Studies even show that social media habits are associated with psychological disorders according to the “How Facebook And Social Media Affect The Minds Of Generation Next” article in The Huffington Post. These examples of the harmful affects of new media just show how much it can affect this generation in the future. There are still other upsides of new media like creating someones dream job.
New media consists of many constructive activities such as the example used in the “Growing Up Digital, Wired for Distraction”. Vishal showed that even with him putting most of his attention into his film-making he still kept his grades up. Most kids wouldnt be able to do what he did due to the fact of spending so much time on social media. I believe that if a teen has a hobby it would be easier to focus on school and that activity. The social media problem shows they arent dedicated to anything really. So in an metaphorically way every teen cant be an Vishal.
Knowing everyone cannot focus alike, websites like Youtube eventually helped him with his talent. New Media in the long run is judged by how its used. Whether your using Facebook for advertising or Youtube for an learning purpose tends to differ from using these sites for recreational use. So you can now see this subject is more of an opinionated argument than an objective argument, so my view on this subject can be different from another persons but we can all agree this subject will continue to grow with the generation.
