Letter to Nick
Dear Nick,
After finally settling into my apartment and getting accustomed to this new place, I remembered to visit your father in Three Bear Hills. Sometime after sending him my letter informing him of my visit, there was no answer, so I decided to just pop in.
As I drove through the prairies, I began to understand why you were always longing for more space and more air. There is peace and tranquillity in these lands; it’s still, with only the sun moving steadily across the sky.
As I reached the town, I decided stopped at a general store to ask for directions and happened to meet the shopkeeper. After some exchanges, we talked about you. He was so proud of your accomplishments and considered you a Big-shot. I understood though. You’re becoming an important scientist now, so I knew what he was saying.
When he told me the way to your old farm, I went immediately. To my
surprise, I didn’t even have to knock before your father opened the door. I knew
that he was your father because you both look so alike.
As we exchanged a few words, I began to understand what you meant about your father. He’s a very traditional man; determined and stubborn. Before long, he was explaining the story behind the broken globe that lay on a wooden table. It opened up a whole new level of understanding for me
I understand why he believed that the earth was flat and that the Sun revolved around the Earth. That’s the way it looks and feels when you stand in the prairie. I looked at him in a different light that day.
He loves you and he sends you greetings. I think you both long to be reconnected again, despite your differences. I hope I’m not intruding into your life
