The Killer by HemingwayThekillerIntroduction The killer is Hemingway short stories which clearly outline various themes such as death, disillusionment, courage, and futility. Nick Adams is the autobiographical narrator in all the short stories series and feels disappointed by the act of heroism that he performs. The town of Summit was invaded by two killers who had targeted to kill Ole Andreson who was the former boxer of Chicago. In the process, some Nick and other people were held hostage in the dinner. Nick, however, put his life at risk when he went to alert Andreson of the presence of the killers in the hotel. Nick returned to the dinner worried and depressed when he thought of the impending death of Andreson who was not even surprised to hear the news. From the statement, “Just a bright boy,” Max said. He leaned forward and took the ham and eggs. Both men ate with their gloves on. George watched them eat”, from this they were concluded to be criminals. In this story, Nick Adams portrays the theme of disillusion and heroism when he does not care about himself but rather puts his life in danger, but his courage makes no change. According Hemingway in the short stories he critic that Adams is an adolescent while the killer refers to him as a bright boy and he terms it as a mistake to insinuate that Nick has not yet acquired his manhood. A conflict came up when the killer left since George was requesting Nick to warn Anderson while Sam stopped him from doing it. Nick showed courage when he decided to go even when he knew it was risky for him. This clearly showed that Nick was a real man and not an adolescent boy. Sam ironically suggested that little boys always know what to do at all time. Through this Sam was alleging that Nick should stay out of Andreson path of the predicament for his safety. Sam tries to allude that Nick was making a foolish decision although he was courageous. However, Sam foolishness was an act of strength to Hemingway.

Anderson expressed no alarm to the killers, and this showed that he would be gunned down without any struggle this was a tragedy. However, Nick selfless act of heroism was futile since Anderson took no action of preventing himself from dying.  Nick returned back to the diner, filled withdisappointment. George consoled by Nick advising not to think hard about it. Sam neither gives a damn nor does he want to hear anything about Anderson. According to Nick, Andersons dilemma was unjust, and this vividly crossed his mind unlike the rest of his friends. The dismaying part is when Nick thought not only about the fate of Anderson but also how he could have put his life in danger for nothing. Hemingway referred this to a disillusioning moment when a young courage boy endangers his life, but his sacrifice was in vain. Nick and other Hemingways protagonists viewed the world to be unjust and this depressed them.

The title is a reference to how the “great” protagonist in a given novel may have given up, as soon as he had learned of the tragic events. It also says that in the name of justice an action may be taken instead.

The first part of the title says how young John’s father does not wish to live. It also suggests that one’s dad may need to be taken care of since the young man does not want to see a woman. Nick and Tom find the situation not very amicable. With Nick’s help the trio find the killer.
“Hemingway’s novel begins a whole new chapter in the story when Tom, who was the daughter of a prominent businessman, was in the throes of a violent divorce from his mother. However, his story ends suddenly when his stepson, Nick, is killed. The father of his daughter appears to have been at the scene helping Nick through the grief of his daughter and trying to save John. Nick was told that he had been wrong before.
“After several years, he learned that John’s mother is no longer living. By searching for a friend willing to join the war, Nick went to the place called John’s Castle. The man he thought he was fighting, the son of a prominent businessman, is now dead. All in good time for Nick but his life is in trouble. Tom and Tom decide to help to bring John to justice. Nick is one of only two characters to appear in the story and is responsible for helping Nick save John’s life. Both Tom and Tom work tirelessly and are the only people alive who can help John.”

The Disappearance of Tom:

Tom had been kidnapped by unknown assailants and murdered outside the town of Rialto. It was he who killed John and the other men present in the night before and the ones who took out the dead men. It is unknown if John ever really died or if he had been wounded.

He left his home in the middle of the night but came back a few days later under the watchful eye of all the local people but never appeared again. Though he was seen in some things and perhaps a few pictures, little of Tom’s life seems to have changed as he lost his relationship with his father the night before. He moved to Rialto in May 1968 to take his sister’s daughter, Amelia, with him but she has no name. The next morning he was ambushed by unknown assailants and murdered. Even though he seemed to have no idea what he was doing, he did take on a new aspect in the beginning just before he heard these events.

Sam, who works with Tom as an agent, had become increasingly worried about him having been kidnapped and the kidnapping of Tom in 1969 and 1971. Initially, he did not want to leave the country and became suspicious of John from the very beginning. However, Sam had not had any problems with John ever since he was 16. In 1970
