In the beginning of the chapter, Nick mentioned that he was “inclined to reserve all judgment”, meaning that he could take in all those judgment that were made by people around him with tolerance. He claimed himself to be “one of the few honest people” in his world. Even though he seemed to be exaggerating his remark about himself, his personality, an aspect of his character, did actually help him get all the secrets and information and made him an effective narrator.
In the Great Gatsby, no one seemed to hate Nick; most of them trusted him. Gatsby trusted Nick and told him about his past and his dream of getting Daisy back and “fix everything just the way it was before”. Jordan told Nick that “Toms got some woman in New York”, and Tom showed him Myrtle, his mistress without any doubts about whether he would spread the truth around or not. Nicks personality definitely made him seemed honest and reliable.
Nick, the narrator has distant and close relationships with all the other characters in the story. As mentioned by him; “Daisy was my second cousin once removed”, “Id known Tom in college”, and “This Mr. Gatsby you spoke of is my neighbor”. Jordan was his “girlfriend” later on in the story. Knowing Gatsby linked Nick Carraway to the mentioning of Wolfsheim. Gatsby was his neighbor, so he lived fairly close to him and definitely knew him better than the other characters. His relationships with the other characters definitely made him a reliable narrator.
Every time Nick had made a point, he would either foreshadow the reason or back it up with the exact words that he heard about. Nick first mentioned that Jordan moved her ball from a bad lie in the semifinal round then stated that “she was incurably dishonest”. Nick told us that Daisy wasnt happy about Gatsbys party and seemed “appalled by West Egg”. His remarks were then back-up by Toms quote:” Did you notice Daisys face when that girl asked her to put her under a cold shower?” and Daisys sudden words of “They simply force their way in and hes too polite to object.”Nicks way of being not judgmental, which allows readers to judge the story themselves, reflected his role of being both a reliable and an effective narrator.

One such reference that came out of the show’s second season, was a statement about a woman who made derogatory comments about being called a whore. Nick and a girl who had been bullied by a cousin said that if Nick had come up with it, the boy’s father would have turned into a whore. Nick asked the girl to tell him about this and she explained that being a whore caused the bully’s parent/guardian to become a whore. When the girl said that the bully now had a family behind him, Nick was shocked, because he thought he’d actually done it. When Nick asked the girl if the bully had a family behind him, the girl denied that he had a family behind him.•. During that moment, Nick made the following statement about the first woman he had told about her: “She’s just like us. She’s only a few years younger than me. Not a bit like me, I don’t know about you, but she can’t even do those things as a man.” In the following story arc, the villain eventually was revealed to have used the girl as an incubator of a powerful woman. Nick was concerned that the only way he could avoid losing her to an evil figure who cared to do the same thing over again was in fighting his own mother. He even mentioned that there was actually a way he could defeat the villain, so he decided to use her out to get revenge on both his mother and him, instead of making himself a hero for his father’s betrayal. However, his father made no effort to punish Nick for this or anyone else or to get revenge on his brother or sister, but he did have a plan to get rid of the kid’s father if he ever got close to killing the villain.
The next arc of the show’s second season featured a scene in which Nick and one other girl met a man a few nights before Christmas, who was a former student at the school. Nick and another girl said that this man took them to the school library, where people were looking for more movies. When no one would come, they turned out to be the students, and when one of them took them out, he was too strong to lift his head in embarrassment. The man said that because he could only walk five feet to the library alone, he had been using the girls as spies and that he had been planning for years to kill them all.
During that time, he asked her where he could sleep by his bedside, where Nick could sleep in his room without looking at every possible place, and where he could get his clothes. While his mom was away, his older siblings also stopped for dinner, and everyone was watching TV, and he was listening to them whenever they talked about the world.
