The Pearl of Great Price
In Matthew 13:45-46 Jesus says, “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant
looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold
everything he had and bought it.” Robert Steinbeck shows this principle in The Pearl
when Kino finds his pearl and he gives up everything to keep it. In this we see a picture
of what Christ did for us.
Kino gave his son for the pearl, in a sense the same way God gave his son for us so
that we could live. In that frame of mind the verse could be interpreted with God being
the merchant and giving up everything to save us from our sins by dying on the cross. In
The Pearl as Kino and Juana walk up the mountain the price of the pearl was finally set; it
would cost them their son. In the same way the price of our souls was set when God sent
his son; it would also cost Jesus’ life.
Steinbeck showed one of the major principles of this verse in a way that has
withstood the ages whether you think that God is the merchant that gave up everything
for us or if we are the merchants that let go of everything to be with God. Applying the
