Non-state actors simplified as (NSA) are entities that take part in international relations and have enough power to influence decisions even though they belong to no specific state or nation. The non state actors participate in forming the rules of a sovereign state, non-governmental organization, international non-governmental organizations well as intergovernmental organization . Through the entrance of non- state organizations or actors there is overriding of the theory that argues that interactions among states are the core elements in studying international events. Non state actors are divided into two major categories which are namely international intergovernmental organizations and Trans-national non-governmental organizations.
Examples of non-state actors include the international media, transnational Diaspora communities, independent intelligence agents, religious groups and multinational corporations among others. On the other hand, nation state is a state that has self identity in deriving political legitimacy as a sovereign entity for a nation. A nation state can be defined as autonomous geopolitical entities which are inhabited by citizens who are the same in terms of the language, history and also ethnicity. They are characterized by boundaries, nationalism sovereignty, defined territory geographically among others. They play a very vital role in decision making in terms of political, economy social and culture in the international relations .
Nation-states and non-state actors are different, but they however work together for the common interest of the international unity. One of the major differences is that when the nation states are divided into geographical boundaries, the non- actors are not divided into geographical territories. Nation states are divided into geographical territories, but non-actors are not. For example, the united nation is a non state actor which influences the decision making in international relations. However, it is not affiliated to a specific country. United States is representing as a nation state in the international relations. This is because it is a sovereign state which is politically governed. Non-states are found all over the states as they are not specified any given.
In addition to geographical difference, the state actors officially represent a nation state while on the other hand, non-state actors come mostly from NGOs or non-governmental organization such as red cross and doctors without borders. State actors represent a government and their decisions are taken as that of the government
