Love is also depicted in Romeo and Juliet as friendship. One of the main friendships in the play is that of Romeo and Mercutio. Whenever Romeo was feeling down and needed some cheering up or if he just needed to fool around, Mercutio was always there for him. After the night of the Capulet party, Tybalt, Juliets cousin, came after Romeo to start a fight with him. Without a second thought, Mercutio stood up for Romeo, fought Tybalt, and died. “Ask for me/ to-morrow, and you shall find me a grave man”(actIII sc.I). Mercutios friendship to Romeo was so strong that he was willing to do anything for him, even if that meant death. Another friendship in Romeo and Juliet is between Romeo and Balthasar. Balthasar was there for Romeo when he got banished from Verona and he also there waiting for Romeo while he was inside the tomb with Juliet to make sure that he was okay. A third friendship in the play is with Benvolio and Romeo. Benvolio, like Mercutio, was there when Romeo needed him and provided a great friendship. In the beginning of the play when Romeo was upset about Roseline not loving him, it was Benvolio who confronted him and asked what was wrong, not Romeos parents. The friendships in this play are strong and filled with love and care for each other.
Another type of love depicted in Romeo and Juliet is the nurses love for Juliet. The nurses relationship with Juliet is that of a mother-daughter. Juliets mother hardly acts as a mother figure to her at all, it is mainly the nurse who Juliet looks to for reassurance and comfort. The nurses love for Juliet can be seen in the way she acts and the things she does. In the beginning of the play when Juliet first meets Romeo, the nurse warned Juliet that he was a Montague.
