The Institute of Medicine (IOM) in collaboration with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation released a report on the need to assess and transform the nursing profession. The report was released in October 05, 2010, focused on the Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.
The Institute of Medicine is collectively known as United States National Academies, established in 1970, which comprises of National Academy of Sciences (NAS), National Academy of Engineering (NAE), and National Research Council, (NRC). Its intention is to help government and privet agencies to make informed un biased health decisions by providing evidence based results which are reliable. It is a very influential organization with a very prestigious stance.
The IOM Report
The IOM report made an impact on the future of nursing, on nursing education, on nursing practice particularly in primary care setting and on the nurse’s role as a leader. The IOM recommendations are advancement of nursing education to bachelor of nursing for better patient out come. Primarily advanced nurse practitioners should be able to advance the boundaries of their scope of practice. They should be able to practice to the full extent for which they received education and training with in their scope of practice. Nurses should be able to perform in leadership role in full partnership with the physicians and other health professionals for the better out come.
Impact on education: IOM recommends that the nurses with BSN degree should be increased to 80% by year 2020. BSN degree is the foundation of nursing education if you want to advance your career to the next level like MSN, CRNA, NP, etc. The affordable care act which was signed by President Obama in 2010 focuses on a health care system to provide safe quality and affordable for the growing population with mild to complex health disabilities. Nurses play a vital role in providing safe and quality patient care. By advancing education patients outcome will be better .Our population is aging and health conditions are getting more complex. To keep up with the complexity of our patients disease conditions nurses have to be competent and knowledgeable. They should have critical thinking, decision making and problem solving abilities. Bachelor of nursing degree prepares nurses mainly in those fields by giving them more advanced and college level education for four years. BSN degree prepares them for leader ship roles. Patient population has become complex and diverse
