Teriesias.
He is reaccuring figure in greek mythology. He has been a woman and a man, and zeus struck him blind. Zeus gave him the gift of prophercy. He is known to posses god-given insight. He is the only one in the play who is not afraid of Oedipis. Tereisas finds the gift of prophecy more of a burden then a benefit. Teriesias accuasations (in the scence between king and prophet) lead him on the course that will end with the stunning revelations at the end of the play.
Jocasta
She is the queen of Thebes, and was the wife of king lais, and mother of Oedipis. She later un knowingly marrys her son, not long after the death of King lauis. Jocasta gave over her baby to a cruel death. She murders a blood relation to prevent the possible killing of her husband.
Creon is Jocastas brother and therefore oedipuss uncle, but then also becomes Oedipuss brother in law when Oedipus marries his mother Jocasta.
Creon recives all the privileges of a the royal couple, but with none of the worries
After the death of his king Lauis, Creon was assigned the responsibility to find the killer, yet it is argued by oedipus that he did not try very hard to do this.
Oedipus also acuses creon of hatching a plot to dethrone him, and although he is entirly innocent of the consipracy charge, Creon does seem to fit comfortably into the role of despot and tyant (a person in power who exercises authority creully)
Creon is a man who seems content with his power and posistion, wants more, as only a king has the power of a king.
With that said creon is still offended that Oedipus would suggest he, Creon, might be plotting against a king. “I would soon as tear out this life within us” – As though saying he would sooner die himself before even contiplating trying to dethrone a king.
The charcertistics of both Creon & Oedipus differ quite dramatically which is seen in their lengthy arguments.
