Basketball is a fast-paced game that is played on a rectangular-shaped court. Each team is comprised of five players. Essentially, the main objective of the game is to sink shots into the hoop, which are placed 10 feet above the ground on each end of the court. When the ball successfully enters the hoop, the offensive team is awarded 2 or 3 points, depending on the location of the shot. The team with the most points at the end of the game is declared the winner.
In order to understand the complexities of the game, one must first clearly grasp the more elemental aspects of it. Most recreation basketball courts are 84 feet long and 50 feet wide, although professional courts are nominally larger, 94 feet long and 50 feet wide. The 3-point line in high school and college games is 19 feet and 9 inches away from the basket, whereas in international play it is 21 feet and 6 inches from the basket. Still different, the NBA pushes its 3-point line to 23 feet 9 inches away from the basket. As you can see, court dimensions vary based on the organization for which it is set up. Basketball requires teamwork, quick reactions, and stamina. Tall players have an advantage because they can reach closer to the basket or above other players to shoot. Smaller players, however, also contribute to their teams as shooters and ball handlers. As previously stated, a team consists of five players: two forwards, two guards, and one center. Each of these players plays both offense and defense. Although each member of the team is vitally important, the point guard is generally the teams leader on the court. He must have outstanding ball-handling skills, as well as extensively developed passing skills. Not to be outdone, the shooting guard must possess excellent shooting skills. The other players, the small forward, the power forward, and the center, must also have good fundamental skills in order to carry the team and keep it one cohesive unit.
Various basketball organizations structure the game in different ways. For example, recreational and high school games last 32 minutes, while college and international games last 40 minutes. Professional womens games last 40 minutes, and mens professional games last 48 minutes. Each game commences with a jump ball
