With a “speechless” mother and a grandmother who continuously complains about her legs, Adjoa is a small confused seven year old. She is confused about why her thoughts are being laughed at and the fact that her legs are always being talked about. That is what she says she “does not like about nana.”
It also seems from this piece of literature the perception of society is very important. This is seen when her grandmother continuously ignores her when she tries to express her thoughts. Unfortunately for Ajoa, she is also mocked and laughed at by others who happen to pass by and are told by her grandmother.
The reason why Adjoa needs thicker “more meat” legs and stronger calves is to support her hip. This support is needed to help pregnancy. This is a very important point that shows the importance of reproducing in society. While Adjoa cannot express her thoughts, she is supposed to do everything to make her physically liable to a safe pregnancy.
What I personally do not understand is why her mother is never saying anything to nana even when she is irritated and burning inside. She is appreciative to her daughters physical appearances and sometimes thoughts. However she does not vividly explain her true feelings and keeps her voice hidden under that of nanas. This leads to a simple question I would address; why?
The story in my opinion revolves around Schelers happy term Alethia, “to call forth from concealedness.” The old aged professor falls in love with Wendy, and marks the beginning of change in his innocent view of life. It starts when she first comes into his office and offers to do “anything” in order for her to guarantee at least a B in school.
After that, he decides to go to a house that hosted a lot of “illegal” activities. He is shocked, confused, and is stunned by the sight of smoke and drinks going around like a sip of water. When he was called “fat,” “old” and boring by Wendy and her friends; he decides to get involved in these dirty activities.
To me, it seems like the professor was doing everything he can to impress Wendy. However, at the same time, he was bringing out his inner self and did what he probably never had a chance to do before. Hence, coming forth from his “concealdness.”
