Best in its Field
Sony is the best in its field of competition because of the quality, style and variety. By being the first in many areas Sony set the standard for others to follow. “Describing what he called Sonys pioneer spirit, Morita said: Sony is a pioneer and never intends to follow others.” (Dearlove &Crainer 191) The transistor radio, Trinitron color television, compact disc player, and consumer camcorder, all firsts for Sony. “In 1949 the company developed magnetic recording tape and, in 1950, sold the first tape recorder in Japan.” (Dearlove &Crainer 190)
I begin to look around my house to see what Sony products I own. My favorite being my compact disc player, it is durable, and stylish. Durability is something many consumers are after and Sony has it.
Sony has competitors from various fields. In the gaming world Sony has Play Station, and the competitors are: Sega, Nintendo, and Microsoft. In Audio equipment Sony goes up against Pioneer, Bose, RCA, Apex, Panasonic, and Phillips just to name a few. In the cell phone world there is Sony Ericson, Motorola, Panasonic, Nokia, and others. Sony has competitors in the music world such as BMG Music and Universal. Dell, Gateway, Apple, and Compaq are not the only personal computer providers, Sony has its own. The last area that Sony excels in is television and movies which competitors are Viacom, Vivendi, Universal, and Time Warner Studios. Variety is the spice of life, which is something that Sony offers its consumers. If you need a plasma television, computer, the best video games, cellular phone, or even a compact disc player Sony has it. So consumers have a peace of mind knowing that their favorite brand can provide them with most if not all of their electronic needs.
Sony has very cutting edge designs, which tend to draw one to their products. Style if often a deciding factor in purchasing one product over another.
“Omoyoshi Ota knows what he wants, and nothing is going to convince him other wise. Ota, 37, an office worker, wants another DVD player for his home- and only a Sony with its slightly curved edges, brushed grey body and elegant lettering will do.” (Belson)
I indeed think style is important too, but great style comes with a price tag, usually higher than the tag for less stylish products. “Ota says Sonys stylish and easy-to-use design is worth the price.” (Belson) “Each Sony product makes a statement about the personality and lifestyle of its owner, as does carrying the Sony brand itself…” (PR Newswire)
Expense is a major drawback for Sony. Even though style and other things contribute to the higher expense of the products, which is where the competitor has the
