And it will take time for us to get some traction with the public to be able to get what we can for the first time. But we can. We do have, however, the potential to change this for the better over time. The biggest problem of our time to deal with this is not our own paper but also that of all our young and old readers. They are growing and they are getting the same information as we do. I will explain those young people the ways in which this is helping us. But for now I will briefly outline a few of my recommendations to help keep our readers engaged.

The main problem is a problem with the Internet where there is no way to connect newspapers, and the whole Internet itself isn’t able to connect any information at all. That is why I propose to use our own electronic news distribution for this purpose (e.g., the Google Docs Service). We could call the Web a public utility, but by its very nature Google can only make public news from our Internet content at sites like St. Louis City Paper, the Associated Press, etc., but that’s not what the Internet is all about. The current news content can only be linked to certain groups at a particular time, and we can link to only that group at that specific time. I am calling on my colleagues and partners, and the community groups I serve, to make the Internet a public utility. We’ll be providing us that information for only our own use. The Web is going to be a different place later. We’ve already done this. We’re going to keep doing it, and we’ll be doing it well.

There needs to be a fundamental change to the way the Web works and we should create a public network of publishers that would not only have the ability to publish news, but can also publish content from any source at any time. This might seem like a hard sell for young people. People should be able to get access wherever they want to read. Many think that news is the only thing that matters. We need to have better services. We need to have our editors be able to check the news before it even starts, to make sure there is no undue influence over something. This is what you need to do because we are talking about what is right now. I believe in you, Mr. Speaker.
