Are People Becoming More Obsessed with Technology?
Taylor, MatthewFirestone, SherryAP English Language and CompositionMarch 20, 2017Are People Becoming More Obsessed With Technology?Technology addiction is becoming more and more common in today’s society with all of the different forms of technology. Some of the different forms of technology would be television, smart phones, tablets, and computers. Over one-third of people will admit that they are obsessed with technology. People with an addiction to technology will check their phone just because they have a sense of boredom. Many people will be on their phone when they are sitting next to each other. People are becoming more obsessed with everyday technology. How can something that is supposed so helpful be that harmful (rhetorical question)? People who state that many people are addicted to their phone are right because Jeremy Slayton took an online survey that consisted of 4,820 people and the survey stated that 35.6% of people admitted that they send text messages while driving. This survey shows how people will risk their lives just to send a message via technology. The survey also demonstrates that people have the compulsion to text when they already have a task at hand. Texting while driving is worse than drunk driving (hyperbole). These studies show how majority of people are addicted to various different types of technology. A global survey from Cranfield School of Management stated that over one-third of participants admitted that they were addicted to technology. Also the survey had 1,200 participants. This shows how many people are aware that they have an obsession with technology. The survey also displays just how many people admitted that they are addicted to technology. In the same newspaper article it stated that over 50% of the respondents admitted that they spend over 50% of their workday on social media websites such as Pinterest and Facebook. This shows how people get on their work computer to get on social media rather than do their job that they are paid to do. Spending that much time on social media would be like losing half of your employees due to drugs (simile). An addiction to technology can be harder to overcome than an addiction of drugs (paradox).
A technology addiction amongst teens will have a negative effect on their learning; a research by Cranfield School of Management stated that 39.3% of 11-18 year olds said hindered the quality of their writing especially the quality of spelling. This shows just how many teenagers can have a negative effect when they use technology too much. If too many teenagers become hindered from technology we will become too reliant on technology to do everything for us. A technology addiction can be a learning disability (metaphor). From the same newspaper article it states that over 60% of students admitted that they are addicted to the internet and over 50% admitted that they are addicted to their cell phones. This shows how the younger age groups are more addicted to technology. The survey demonstrates how younger people will become too reliant on their phones and will not become a productive citizen. The study emphasizes how people are becoming more obsessed with their smart phone. On a website article it states that 58% of men and 47% women suffer from nomophobia, fear of being without their smartphone. This shows how many people cannot go without their smart phone which is an addiction. The article also displays that people are becoming too reliant on their smart phone. A fear of losing their phone could like claustrophobia because they would feel isolated (simile).
