While teaching diversity in the classroom can be difficult, it can be a bit easier if teachers would realize that each student want to maintain their own background, cultural beliefs, and customs. Recognizing that just because certain ethnicities seem to share certain qualities does not mean they should be assumed to be the same and treated the same. “This implies that teacher of today and tomorrow will not only have to sensitive to minority needs but cultural diversity among minorities” (Henson & Eller, 1999, p. 122). Stereotypes and preconceived notions must be cast aside in order for students to have a fair chance to succeed in the classroom. Teachers must remember their own cultural opinions do not matter and should never be brought into the classroom. Teachers should encourage students to embrace their cultural identities and should care to include adequate representations of all cultures in the classrooms. “Having pride in ones people plays a role in building self-respect, and this can translate into academic achievement” (Orlich, et.al., p. 51).
Creating racial unity can be implicated using simple instructional strategies:
Encourage parental participation and responsibility within the instructional framework of the school.
Open channels of communication among schools, communities, and parents that encourage the use of programs aimed at improving family stability and achievement for all racial groups
Help all students so participate in class activities.
Discuss with students the economic risks of dropping out of school.
Provide short- and long- term instructional plans that stress academic success for all students. (Orlich, et. al., p.49).
