Daniela Bernal Pineda Lecture Exam II Bios 110
Daniela Bernal Pineda Lecture Exam II BIOS 1102. The relation between the mouse and the plant in the container could be considered a mutualistic symbiotic relationship (temporarily), because it’s a close and continuing relationship between organisms of different species (animal and plant) in which both organisms benefit. The crucial aspect for this relationship is that the plant in the sealed container needs to have contact or access to sunlight, because without sunlight both organisms won’t survive so long. In the container the mouse and the plant will develop an environment with breathable air for each other through a cycle, the mouse inhale oxygen and release carbon dioxide as result of cellular respiration and the plant take carbon dioxide and release oxygen as result of photosynthesis. The mouse takes the oxygen produced by the plant to live and the plant takes the carbon dioxide that the mouse produced, through this cycle both organisms obtain some of the vital substances for survival. The sunlight is primordial because without it the plant is not able to produce photosynthesis, without photosynthesis no oxygen will be produced, if there’s no oxygen the mouse dies and if the mouse dies there’s no cellular respiration so there’s no carbon dioxide for the plant and the plant will die.Other factors are involved in the survival of the organisms, the water system benefits both and the mouse through its excrements will provide nutrients to the plant, but the survival of the organisms is temporary, because the mouse needs food to survive and in the container the only food source is the plant, so the mouse will eat the plant and without the plant no oxygen will be produced and the mouse will die for the lack of oxygen. The water system and the cycle of breathable air can’t supply all the aspects that both organisms need to survive, so eventually both organisms will die, therefore the mutualistic symbiotic relationship and the survival of the mouse and plant are temporary.
