Organizational Behavior
According to the personality test, I scored fairly low on extraversion. According to the report, extraversion is shown when one obtains gratification from outside himself/herself. They tend to prefer interacting with people, and are enthusiastic and action-oriented, whereas introverts often prefer being alone, are more quiet, reserved, and low-key. Introverts aren’t necessarily shy, they just find solitude when they are disengaged from the social world. The report on my extraversion level was accurate as I take pleasure in solitary activities. Reading, meditating, writing, and staying at home are some of the activities that I find enjoyable. I find more reward in spending time alone rather than spending time with large groups of people, and sometimes I am overwhelmed by too much social engagements and gatherings. A downside that I find to being introverted is that it is difficult to express emotions-positive or negative, which I think is important at home and at work. It would also be difficult to perform well in jobs that would require significant interpersonal interaction since modern workplace cultures are strongly geared towards the extroverted personality type. But while extroverts are more likely to push their ideas forward, speak up in meetings, or take risks, introverts are more likely to think things through and be analytical. I think this strength is important especially when making critical decisions in the workplace. Not trying to handle many tasks at once and working until a goal has been accomplished could also describe an introvert.
Another personality trait that was mentioned is agreeableness. It describes the level of cooperation and social harmony among individuals. People who are agreeable are warm, accept and trust others easily, and have an optimistic view of others. The results show that I have a high level of agreeableness, which indicates having a strong interest in others’ needs. This is a strength in the workplace when the organization has a team based culture. Being pleasant, sympathetic, and cooperative helps in creating a spirit of harmony in the workplace. However, agreeableness can be a downside when dealing with negative behavior. Agreeable people tend to avoid conflict, and this results in tolerance to bad behavior. They also prefer having a culture of consensus, so agreeableness may be a hindrance when competition is present in the workplace.
Scoring high in conscientiousness means that a person is perseverant, dependable, and disciplined. Avoiding trouble and achieving high levels of success through purposeful planning and persistence are some benefits of conscientiousness. Others also see conscientious people as intelligent and reliable, which I find interesting. In terms of work, they are highly task focused and are mindful of ethics. In my family and among my friends, they regard me as someone someone who strives hard to achieve excellence. This is a good trait, most of the time, but in the workplace, others may see it as being a perfectionist, or even workaholic. Another negative aspect of having high conscientiousness is being regarded as boring. The things I do are fun and exciting for me, but people always tell me to be spontaneous and impulsive sometimes.
