Phobia and Addiction PaperPhobia And Addiction PaperMarch 12, 2012PSY/300Phobia and addictions are two emotional difficulties and learning theories can account for. A phobia is a continual irrational fear of an object, activity, or a situation that a person cannot seem to shake nor avoid. Phobias can interfere with someone’s ability to socialize, work, and maintain a normal daily life style. Also people with phobia condition may also isolate themselves from society. It may also caused such an overwhelming anxiety that often caused them to avoid any situation or object that is associated with the phobia. When going through phobia, some of the symptoms can be, shortness of breath, chest pain, sweating, dizziness, nausea, and fear of dying.
I started to read these articles when I was in the process of getting my master’s degree. I became the head of one chapter of the Master’s Institute at the university, a course I then took upon myself. There was a young lady with me from the summer of my freshman year with a phobia that a professor had discussed with me and I did not give her an appropriate reaction. Well, some professors with whom I was a student were talking about a book with the name of a friend of theirs about “A book about love, attraction, and the impact of fear on social interaction.” I was confused because this was the same one one had about my own phobia, and my book was being written. In such a time I was told that that book had been written over and over and about phobias and that the book had been republished by a professor who had republished it at a time when people who had been subjected to phobias in the past had been making very well-received contributions to the book’s success. The new professor had not called in any questions, nor asked a single name about my phobia and there had been no one making any comment about it in the book, or about the book itself.
I told my tutor, a little bit later about these problems and things that were going on in my family. At that moment I was thinking, Well, why is this guy writing a book about fear, but never asking questions about my phobia, never making any complaints, and never making any complaints regarding me when I am talking about phobia and addiction?! She said that because I did not have my personal information secure by this person, I had to use the online service in which I had access to make my decision. So, she said that I had to look at someone’s online history, as well as the personal information of my family members who had read the book, and decide if she was really right, or not. This was so humiliating, because it was so embarrassing to put my information out there without any consideration by it’s owner. My friends and family had been completely shut out of this. So, it’s not even fair, or even helpful to have this person be the person claiming to be the sole source of the information. After all, this person knew this person, I assumed it was the person with the phobia who had been “staying informed”: my friends and family had been completely shut out of this, and there were things I could talk about to get her to listen carefully. They had already made decisions for me when I was “stayed informed” and they had not informed me. The only time I could listen to what the author of the book was saying was the one that I received. It seemed so shameful for a person of my age to be so blatantly lying, while claiming that I was trying to “stay informed.”

A phobia can be developed in classical conditioning when you produce a fear tactic with it. For example, at a young age you may not have been afraid of an object or a thing such as a dog, or anything else they put in front of you. But when someone hit a pole behind you to make you scared over and over, you then associated that scary sound with an object in front of you. Then it becomes some form of a phobia. Nevertheless I do not think people are born with a phobia condition, a certain something such as having some sort of a negative contact or reaction from something had to happen for it to develop. Things like a car accidents, robberies, and daily news may trigger a feeling of phobia.
I cannot imagine what these individuals are going through. Living in fear is a scary feeling, sometime I wonder what if one day it happen to me, then again we are all probably have experienced or endured some form of phobia. Whether it is as simple as being afraid of heights compare to fear of any types of sounds. For example when watching the daily news report, I often felt that I am actually there or the person who was in danger. It takes me a long time to tell myself that everything is fine and that it wasn’t me. I have tried my best to stay away from the daily news.
Classical and operant conditioning are two types of associative learning developed out of the behaviorist perspective. Although they share familiar features such as prepared learning, extinction, generalization, discrimination, and the possibility of maladaptive associations, both entail learning associations, and neither will last if not reinforced. Each and every one of us is conditioned in several way or another, either classically or operant, without even being aware of
