Greek life is a very big part of life here on the URI campus. Being in a fraternity I know this first hand. There are many people here on campus that are part of a fraternity or sorority and they all really enjoy it. There are 11 fraternities and 9 sororities on campus. I have been in this fraternity for just a semester so far but I have come to realize that most of my friends now are part of the Greek system. I still maintain my friends who are not in the system but most of the people I associate with are in a fraternity or sorority. I feel that people in the Greek system can relate to each other better than people who aren’t in the system because they all have a group of people who are all doing the same thing and have gone through the same thing as the rest of the people in that house.
Another perk of being in the Greek system is being able to live with everyone you associate with and are in that group with. Living in a fraternity house is a much better way to live rather than living in the dorms. In the house, you can walk out of your room and have people who would do anything for you if you needed it. You also live with everyone you would usually hang out with. It’s also a good idea because if you don’t have a house then you have to struggle to find a meeting place. With a house you can have all your events there. We used to have to find places to meet and now we can just have everything in the house. Living in a house with everyone in your fraternity or sorority is a great way to live.
Another perk of Greek life are the socials. Socials are basically parties that one group has with another Greek group. A social is a great way to get to know other people in the opposite sexed group. You get to spend an evening with the whole group and get to know them as a group as opposed to a regular party where you might not know everyone and it could be just a lot of random people. At socials you know where these people are from and what they do.
Another great perk of Greek life is an event on campus called “Greek Week.” It is a week long series of competitions where fraternities and sororities pair up and play games and compete against other pairings. The most important events of Greek week are Lip Sync and Greek Sing because they are worth the most amounts of points. We spent 2 months preparing for both of those events because they are worth so much. Also, during Greek week
