False StartFalse StartThe beginning of the winter olympics got me thinking of past games, past events, and in correlation with the inauguration of the Conservative Government, false starts. Lets turn our attention to track events, specifically running. In events like the 100m to and through the the 5000m, a runner is only allowed one false start. Any false start that occurs after the initial costs the runner the race, they are automatically disqualified. Politicians on the other hand rarely ever taste the sour sting of the rule book. One might argue that the people hold them accountable on election day, but weve seen time and time again politicians who have broken the rules get elected back into the house of commons.
I must say it was a bit unexpected, not even a day after Harper became the Prime Minister he started to mess up. The issue at hand is the appointment of David Emerson and, Michael Fortier. Many of you have probably heard a lot about David Emerson recently, and Im pretty sure none of it has been good. Luckily for Mr. Fortier, he hasnt had the same misfortune. Dont misinterpret that in any sense meaning he was rightfully appointed, people would just rather focus on Emerson because he was a larger shock to the system.
David Emerson, what a character; he ran as a Liberal in this past election, won by a large margin, and crossed the floor even before there was one to cross. If I remember correctly, not even a year ago that Belinda Stronach did the same thing, and was nearly torn apart by verbal flak from the tories. It would be somewhat redundant to ask if anyone sees the hypocrisy in this situation. Nevertheless, it remains so.
Im hesitant to place this as strike one against the tories, Ill only do so if Harper or Emerson decide to hold a by-election. I predict the same events would occur as they did to the Liberals after they called The Gomery Inquisition. The best thing in this scenario would be to play by the saying, “out of sight, out of mind”. No one really remembers that in 2004 the sponsorship scandal was primary issue of attacks against the Liberals. However, at that time there was no Gomery, no question of Liberal corruption, and therefore in the world of politics nothing to worry about. In the past election however, the attacks worked, and its because in a sense the Liberal core was rotting from the inside; the people did not want an “organized crime” unit
towards Harper-Enbridge; The Gomery, the Gomery’s, and the other Liberal/Conservative elements in Manitoba. The Conservatives would have wanted the Tories; a party that would not tolerate human rights abuses of their own citizens. But this was not the only threat. We can see how many of those who attacked Harper-Enbridge were those who took in thousands of dollars worth of goods stolen by NDP MPs, the NDP’s money being used to provide political support to the Conservatives, or those who, as reported by the Winnipeg Free Press, did not feel free to vote for the Harper Party members they were supposed to. They also were using the power of the press to attack and discredit the new Liberal Party members, even if they would not support such an attack by their own party. To their friends and supporters, it would make their lives tougher, they also thought that this would mean the end of free speech and it should be done with “toughness.” This is just a few examples of what we are witnessing. But as a final note, this is what my own perspective seems to be. Some think that all political parties should go on a peace campaign. Others call it the “Gomery-Harper War” or it “Harriet, the Gomery”. Others call it “the Harper-Enbridge-Harper War”: both are not necessary. Others see political party leaders as heroes, and those fighting the Harper faction as villains. No such hero, except in the Canadian right, would have any moral backbone. What is needed is that political parties change their stances on all issues without being judged. I believe that the Liberals should make the same change in the next election. It is the only way that people would know what is wrong in terms of political party. The idea is simple. All political parties should give everyone a fair say in what is done by other parties, and the same applies to politics. For it to work, all parties have to agree to accept that the government or any member of the federal government gets to decide how to work for the benefit of all Canadians. This should be done by all other parties. As a result, our only hope is that some of the other leaders of our Liberal party are able to see the other side. Because this will make them recognize that they are all complicit in this. And that it is their duty to do it. This may sound strange to some but at the end of the day, that is just how politics work. Politics has to work for the benefit everybody. No one else is immune to that problem. The only way that people can act is if it happens to be in the way that they chose to act, not the other way around. No more of that. People are going out and organizing every way they can to help other people. Why would a politician choose to do that if it is done in the way he has chosen? It was nothing but the right
